I recently had the opportunity to review this cute Irish t-shirt! Great quality, vibrant color and a super fit - this T-shirt is going to make me stand on on St. Patrick's Day since we have a huge party at work!!

When the denotations came, only a handful was let into the dome, a safe haven. Those outside of the dome were fused with whatever they were holding when the blasts came. For young Pressia, she was holding her baby doll and now, her right hand is a doll face. Some weren't so lucky and fused with the ground, others with glass, steel and animals.

When a person turns sixteen, the OSR expects them to join or they will be forced. There, they become soldiers or if they are weak, they become live targets. Pressia is about to turn sixteen, so her grandfather fashions a cupboard for her to hide in.

Partridge lives in the dome; his father in charge. He's been taught that outside of the dome is filled with 'wretcheds', people who are no longer human and are dangerous to him and others like him. They are called 'Pures' because they have not fused with anything. When Partridge's father slips and speaks of his mother in the present tense, not the past as expected because she is dead, Partridge believes his mother is alive. He makes a plan to escape to the outside and find his mother. He does escape and soon finds himself in the clutches of groupies, mothers who are fused to their young.

Pressia, now on the run from OSR, comes to his rescue. She vows to help him find his mother but first she gets the aid of her friend Bradley, a man fused with birds who is attracted to Pressia. The three of them begin to come up with a plan, but it's soon thwarted when Pressia is taken captive by the OSR. Unbeknown to them, she agrees to their demands. Help the Pure find his mother and then take them both to the Dome. They have her grandfather and will kill him if she doesn't comply.

Pure is a new dystopian series that will entrance you and set your teeth on edge. I really liked the characters but the items that the characters fused to really creeped me out. There are some romantic entanglements alluded to and I look forward to seeing those develop in a future installment. Death, destruction, hope, love and the will to survive sets the tone for this gritty and remarkable post-apocalyptic thriller. Fans of young adult dystopian won't want to miss it. It's just that good!

At first, it looks like a suicide but Master Hugh finds the evidence to the contrary. Thomas has a busted lip, broken tooth, mud on the heels of his shoes and redness on his wrists. He is sure someone murdered him. However, the coroner declares it a suicide and Thomas must be buried on unhallowed ground. It's against the church to kill oneself and he can't be buried in its grounds.

Master Hugh is sure he knows who killed Thomas, John Kellet, a priest gone bad who was in the area at the time of Thomas' demise. However, upon his investigation, he finds out that John is incapable mentally and physically to have killed Thomas and Master Hugh must investigate further. No one liked Thomas' and no one minds his loss, but Master Hugh is determined to find out who killed him.

Unhallowed Ground is a complex mystery set in the 1300's. Starr does a fantastic job of recreating that time era and bringing the details vibrantly to life. The characters are compelling and the plot tight, keeping the reader motivated to follow the clues. The fourth in the Hugh de Singleton mysteries, Unhallowed Ground can be read as a stand-alone novel. The first of the series that I have read, I look forward to going back and reading the first three, The Unquiet Bones, A Corpse at St. Andrew's Chapel and A Trail of Ink.

MY THOUGHTS
I have to admit I was a little confused in the beginning of Alienation. I did not read the first book in the series, Invasion, but Lewis did a good job of catching the reader up in the first few chapters. Colt and his best friends Danielle and Oz are working hard, waiting until they enter the C.H.A.O.S Academy - a military academy where they will be trained to defend Earth against alien shape shifters.

There's a deadly virus that has erupted, killing anyone in its path within 48 hours. A biological attack? Perhaps but they still haven't successfully created a cure. Oz's dad is the current director of C.H.A.O.S. but many feel that Colt, even though young, would be a much better fit. But not everyone agrees with that and Colt has several attempts on his life before he can make it to the Academy. Colt thinks he is just lucky, but others believe he has a gift. But when Colt takes a massive hit, he might not be so lucky after all.

Alienation is a fast-paced young adult read with high impact action and great characters. If you enjoy comics, strong and abundant details that come alive before your eyes and superior writing, pick up Alienation today!

MY THOUGHTS

Though the description makes it sound as though the actual story begins once Ari's client disappears, the fact is that the book actually travels through Ari's life and the disappearance doesn't happen until near the end. As a character, Ari is fascinating. She's a bit unusual but still goes through the every day trials that all of us do. As a story, it's mostly just interesting. I wouldn't say I was intrigued or anxiously flipping from page to page to see what happens next. Basically, I sat back and watched Ari's life unfold.

The best part of this book for me was the spiritual context. Several places take different religious aspects and pick them apart. This lets you join in the discussion in your head and figure out your own beliefs. Later, other serious topics (such as politics) enter and once again you get to check out new perspectives and figure out where you yourself lie in the mix.

This book is well written and easy to read while at the same time causing you to think about both your life and others, as well as the possibilities of our lives and mortality.

SO DAMN LUCKY is the third installment in the LUCKY O'TOOLE series, following WANNA GET LUCKY? and LUCKY STIFF. If there's trouble to be found, it usually winds up on Lucky's doorstep and she meets it head on every time. With twists and turns of not only the mystery, but the love lives of herself and those closest to her, SO DAMN LUCKY is a rip-roaring good time. Magical and thoroughly entertaining, I love this series!

MY THOUGHTS
Madeleine had a serious health problem when she was younger. A birth mark that blossomed as a tumor and became life-threatening was finally surgically removed when she was seven. However, after the surgery, Madeleine was never the same again. She has visions and they are usually of people she doesn't know.

When her parents are murdered, Peter Duncan, the boy who saved her from the ferry, offers his aid to Madeleine. The two are soon in over their heads in a sea of corruption and international intrigue. Rico Salazar has spent most of his life building up his business and he will stop at nothing to keep it secret and stabile.

Shadow Cay is a thriller with a dangerous sexy edge. The characters took me awhile to piece together as their stories start out separately before they weave into the main plot, but once I did, I was captivated. Madeleine is a superb heroine that I can't wait to see in another installment. Bodie writes a fast paced story that ends with a bang. You won't want to miss this one!

Short chapters make the pace quick and the characters are believable and relatable. Romance, mystery, science that even I can understand and sharp writing mesh together into a thrilling read!

Wanna Get Lucky? by Deborah Coontz

Lucky O'Toole is the customer relations executive at the Babylon Casino and Resort in Las Vegas. She and her assistant work twenty hour days and still the job is never done. With the casino about to embark on their busiest week of the season, she knows she has to help the police wrap it up quickly and quietly.

Teddie is a heterosexual who dresses as a woman and performs one of the best shows the Babylon has. He's also Lucky's best friend, but he wants more. She has deep feelings for Teddy but is afraid to deepen their relationship. She's afraid if things go south, she'll lose her best friend. Meanwhile, security at the Babylon has hired a new employee, Paxton Dane. He's a cool drink of waterand although she might be interested, she's not sure of his intentions. His name has come up in her investigation, and she isn't sure if he is a good guy or a bad guy.

When Lucky learns that her boss, the owner of the Babylon, was in the airplane at the time of the victim's jump, Lucky kicks up her investigation a few notches. An old flame of Lucky's has contacted her and has subtly let her know that her boss is about to go down for the murder. Subsequently, the Babylon will be up for grabs. Adamant about keeping her job, her sanity and her libido under control, Lucky is about to discover how far she is willing to go to keep those she loves safe.

WANNA GET LUCKY? is a highly entertaining read! I couldn't put it down. The characters are eccentric, erratic and lovable. Lucky is the glue that holds everything together and when shebegins to unstick, the pieces fall in the most unsuspecting ways. Glamorous, hilarious, mysterious and romantic, WANNA GET LUCKY? is a fabulous read that I can't recommend high enough. I can't wait to read the next one, LUCKY STIFF.

The Secret Sisterhood of Heartbreakers by Lynn Weingarten

Lucy privately thinks that it's just what she needs - something to get Alex to fall back in love with her. She just won't break his heart. But no matter what she tries, Alex brushes her off. The girls make-over Lucy and she has new confidence, boys are paying attention to her. She begins acting different, shrugging off invites from her best friend and still trying to come up with a way for Alex to remember he loves her. When she passes a test the sisters give her, Lucy decides she wants nothing to do with them and their magic anymore. However, the heart works in mysterious ways and Lucy isn't prepared for what happens next. It sets her whole world atilt.

The Secret Sisterhood of Heartbreakers is a mesmerizing tale of new love, growing up, cliques and a splash of magic. With twists and turns, the story remains fresh and entertaining throughout to the surprising ending. The characters are compelling and modern, with only a spattering of cursing and adult situations, making this enthralling story suitable for older teenagers or adults alike.

1. In twenty words or less, please describe your newest book.

Inside an old U-Boat on the bottom of the Baltic are millions in gold and a secret that could tear NATO apart.

2. There is a lot of historical facts in Amongst My Enemies. How much research went into it?

A lot. However, I had a double major in history, and I had considerable background and research material before I honed in on those specific situations. That period has always been fascinating for me. War, whether WW II or Vietnam, is inherently dramatic and emotional, so it makes good settings for stories. While I say I have written six novels, that means I finished six. Amongst My Enemies is actually my 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, and probably 10th novel, because I re-wrote and restructured it that many times. I had all this great material, but my characters didn’t work and story line just didn’t work, so I stayed at it until it did. The problem was I fell in love with the subject and that can be fatal. It took me years to get it in proper balance. We are supposed to be story tellers, not historians. The good news is that several of the intervening novels are also set in the same period, so I did put the extra research to good use.

3. Have you ever been on a U-boat? If so, how was your experience?

Actually, as everyone who grew up in Chicago knows, the U-505 WW II German submarine has been on display in the side yard of the Museum of Science and Industry since the 1950’s. It was captured in the North Atlantic by the Navy and brought to Chicago and is now one of the very few in existence. Every year in elementary school, we would take a day trip there, and go through the coal mine, the railroad exhibits, and climb through that old U-Boat at the museum. It is very tiny inside, and very impressive, as is the movie, “Das Boot.”

4. What book are you currently reading?

Twisted Key, by Gary Showalter, a writing friend. It is a contemporary mystery set in Florida, ala the John D. MacDonald Travis McGee books. But it is hard to focus on reading a book when I’m in a writing cycle.

5. You've went in opposite direction in your last two books. What can we expect in your next work? Can you share anything about it?

They are very different, and probably the two extremes of my writing styles. The Undertaker is a snarky, contemporary, ‘chase book’ told in the 1st person with humor, romance, and a touch of terror. Amongst My Enemies, on the other hand is a much meatier and epic story of one man’s journey through hell to redemption. The common thread is lots of action and good characters, especially the really evil ones. What’s nice is to see both books well received. That gives me some confidence. The next one I’m letting out of the barn is Thursday at Noon. It is set in Egypt in 1962 and deals with an outcast CIA agent, Islamic terrorists, rogue German scientists, a planned coup, and rockets aimed at Israel. I began it immediately after Amongst.

Mike Randall's bomber went down in Germany during the war. He and his friend Eddie survive for months as slave labor in the freezing battle scarred land. A high ranking officer of the 3rd Reich purloins an old U-boat to haul millions of dollars’ worth of artifacts and gold for his own personal reasons. The captain finds him, a German who doesn't agree with the politics but wants to stay alive, and he gives Mike mercy - food, shelter, warmth. He also puts Mike on a black rubber raft near the shores of Sweden, neutral territory where Mike can eventually find his way home. But while Mike was on the raft, the U-boat, surfaced, is bombed by overhead jets. There are no survivors.

Mike spends time in Sweden then eventually makes his way home to America, to Eddie's house. There, he falls in love with Eddie's sister Leslie, even though he doesn't pursue the relationship. After all he has been through; he can't imagine pulling anyone else into his nightmares. Then, something surprising happens. The captain of the U-boat Mike was on is touring and making a stop in New York. Mike was sure he was dead, so he immediately wants to go see him and to thank him for his chance.

When Mike confronts the man, he acts surprised. Mike is sure that it is an imposter. With the help of Manny, a retired police detective, Mike divulges what he knows. But before they can investigate, there is an attempt on Mike's life. Not sure what is going on, Manny implores Mike that he needs to go back to Sweden and find the U-boat.

Mike can't even remember where the U-boat went down; just a vague idea. With Leslie and Manny with him though, he decides to give it a shot. Will he live long enough to find it? With some wanting gold, some wanting proof that there is a spy inside NATO and some just wanting Mike and his friends dead, there is a lot of ducking and conniving to outsmart them, but will they? How high of a cost are they willing to pay?

Amongst My Enemies is an intelligent, powerful and thought-provoking adventure. A tale rich in history unfolds, leaving the reader begging for more. Brown's characters are compelling, sharp and authentic. From freezing Germany to bustling New York to the fishing wharves of Sweden, Brown takes the reader on an unforgettable journey. Suspense, murder, romance, heart-pumping action scenes and spectacular writing, Amongst My Enemies is one of the best old-fashioned adventures I've had the pleasure to read. Definitely pick this one up!

Signs of War is the second book in the Cris De Niro series. Fortunately, the author does a great job of catching the reader up with what happened in the first book in case you missed it. Therefore, Signs of War can be read as a standalone, but I highly urge you to read the first one - it's just that good.

Cris De Niro started a group called The Watchmen after 9/11 in the hope that they could help thwart terrorists. But when his good friend Charley Santappia, and the agency's Vice President of Operations, dies, Cris has second thoughts about the agency. Fortunately, his team reminds him why he created the agency, and Cris is back to business as usual.

The Watchmen become aware of a missiles deal between Venezuela and Iraq, thanks to an undercover ops against who goes against his commander's gag order and tells the agency about it. Now, the team must find out what is exactly going on and how much of a terrorist threat it is - then infiltrate, dismantle and destroy.

But nothing is every easy. An old friend of De Niro's calls needing help. British citizens have been kidnapped by Somali pirates and Cris's friend, David Nicholls wants Cris to rescue them. Then there is a call for help at Tohono O'odham Nation's reservation. Too much border infiltration and activity leads to The Watchmen becoming involved. For an agency that Cris was thinking of disbanding, they sure are busy! Cris spreads his team to cover all three missions, but they are all deadly and brimming with tension. Will they succeed and if so, at what cost?
Heart-stopping action, impossible decisions, a touch of romance, suspense, betrayal and courage set the tone for this thrilling installment in the Cris De Niro series. Gerard de Marigny writes with flair and attention to detail, ensnaring the reader in his web from the first page. MY THOUGHTS

History of a Pleasure Seeker is well-thought out and descriptive, almost like watching an old black and white movie. The focus is on the characters and not pomp and flash. I really enjoyed the characters, they were well-rounded and intriguing.

Humor just jumps out at you on rare occasions, which was surprising, yet rewarding. The time period is true to form and lends authenticity to the story. I must say, I'm not much of a person to read erotica or erotic scenes. However, Mason does it with aplomb. They give you a sense of forbidden passion and intrigue, without becoming gaudy or too intricate. Sensual and suspenseful, History of a Pleasure Seeker is a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. Pick it up today!

Coopers had a rough life. He is missing a ring finger from childhood, his mother committed suicide when his father took up with a woman of color, and then his father was murdered. The killer never found. Now, on his second marriage, Cooper is the architect for his wife's family business. His father-in-law is an oil tycoon and about to take the business into a green direction, focusing on energy instead of oil.

When the detective who investigated Cooper's dad shows up during a press conference, he is stunned. It's been fifteen years, what could she want now? When she talks to Cooper after the conference, she explains that his dad's case is the only one she hasn't been able to close. A cold case for fifteen years, she wants to reopen the case.

When Cooper's stepson, Kavanall, is murdered, Cooper does some investigating of his own. As the investigation gets deeper, Cooper begins to realize that the two murders are connected, and that his life could be in jeopardy.

The MacGuffin is a page-turning suspense with remarkable characters. My favorites were the visits Cooper made to his trainer and the dentist. Humorous but revealing information was exchanged at those appointments that really lead the reader in the right direction. Michael Craft is an extremely talented author and storyteller - keeping this reader entranced from beginning to end. Mystery readers won't want to miss this one!

A Will to Murder by Hilary Thomson

James Boyle likes things his way. He loves to show off his car to the small town, but a normal excursion into town he is shocked to hear a loud thumping noise. Imagine his dismay when he realizes the rap music is coming from his own car. James dies, from shame or a heart attack, it's hard to say.

The family begins to come out of the woodwork for the reading of James' will. He was very wealthy. His two daughters, Rose and Jac, arrive with their families. His sister Katherine lived with him and assumes she will be the main beneficiary. His son, who also lives with him, and hasn't worked a day in his life, also assumes he will be the main beneficiary. The reading of the will, though, is delayed as they wait on other family to arrive.

Lance and Collette arrive, children from James' long lost sister, and Bradley Smith with his reporter friend, Eric Maxwell. Bradley didn't know he had any family living until he gets the notice from the lawyer. He also brings his two cats, much to the chagrin of the family, who have a dog.

When the will is read, there is stunned silence. Arthur, the only child of Rose, receives a penny - the only grandchild to get anything. Rose and Jac do not receive anything and Katherine is the beneficiary. But the will reading stops when Jac begins to throw a tantrum.

Not long after the will reading, another death occurs. Each time someone dies, the will changes and someone else dies. With such an eccentric family, there are many mishaps, embarrassing moments and mischief as they begin to know one another. As the deaths pile up, all declared natural by the medical examiner, Eric begins to question and investigate. With that much money at stake, no one is safe.

A Will for Murder is charming, fascinating and thoroughly entertaining. It reminded me so much of the game Clue, as different people died in different rooms and you want to know, who did it? I was sad to see it end. Hilary Thomson is a very gifted writer, with an attention to detail and well-depicted characters that keep the pages flowing seamlessly. I can't wait to see what she has in store next!

Cronus, the King of the Titans, has awoken and Calliope is determined to let him escape his prison and wreak havoc upon humanity. Henry is the only person who can open the gates to let him through, and he refuses to do so. When Kate arrives, she is determined to save him, even if it costs her her life. Henry, however, doesn't seem happy to see her and acts like he doesn't care if she lives or dies. Her heart crumbling, Kate vows that if she lives through the fight with Cronus, she will leave Henry. But Kate doesn't realize how deep Calliope's hatred is for her, and any future she might have is in danger.

GODDESS INTERRUPTED is a great twist on Greek mythology! With new modern names replacing the god names, at first, it is confusing until you realize who each one represents. Zeus is determined to use new names since it is a new world. The emotional turmoil Kate goes through is heartbreaking, yet she is strong, and I found myself becoming her champion. With fantastic characters, super world-building and an action-packed plot, GODDESS INTERRUPTED refuses to be put down until the last page is read. She gathers the help of her friends and an old man offers his aid, as well. They petition the town to save the creek, and their teamwork and friendship creates a unique bond between them. But when danger comes close to home, Iris needs to decide what's important - the creek, the dragons or her life?

How to Gracefully Disagree

As a book reviewer, you’re called to give your perspective on books that cater to your blog or publications. Usually reviewers do this job with an air of professionalism appropriate to their vocation, but too often they throw caution to the wind when they review a book that they didn’t enjoy. You can usually tell when a reviewer disliked a book by observing any of these cues: 1) they say they don’t like it, upfront and often with vitriol 2) their writing is more florid and spirited in describing their least favorite aspects of the work 3) they let personal preferences and peeves influence their review. While some readers might delight in reading a crushing book review, the effects of a rabidly negative review will likely lower the reviewer’s professional reputation.

Of course there’s nothing wrong with writing a negative review of a book. If you didn’t like it you should say so. After all, that’s your job. But there are ways to review a book critically and constructively, without sounding like a feckless pundit on a controversial media outlet.

Backup your protests

It might seem like a bit of obvious advice, but you’d be surprised at the number of book reviews that castigate their subjects without proper explanation. Again, it’s a matter of professionalism. While cutting words will attract readers, they certainly won’t take your advice to heart if you have nothing else to say. If you’re going to take a stance against a book, be ready to support exactly why you disagree with it. If you felt like a detective novel’s plot lacked believability, for instance, cite passages or specific plot points that confirm your claims. If you felt like this same fictitious detective novel presented the reader with unlikeable, one-dimensional characters, explain how better character development would have helped the overall story.

Tact is your friend

While you want to be substantive in your critiques, I certainly recognize that publishers around the world print terrible books. Sometimes the urge to transform a negative review into a fiery rant on the state of contemporary publishing and authorship can be near insurmountable, but you must stay strong. Temper your distaste with a tactful voice and you’ll thank yourself later for not coming off as an over reactionary reviewers with too much time on their hands. A fantasy novel with a thinly drawn female protagonist that reads like the ten previous books you read might tempt you to right “This trashy book exemplifies what is wrong with the genre” could be better, and more constructively, written as to look something like this: “I disagree with the author's depiction of their female protagonist. It felt to me like they were cheapening the genre with a thinly drawn character that only perpetuates a boring stereotype.”

At least one positive

Whatever your take may be on a book, no matter how little you enjoyed it, and there must always be one positive aspect that you can draw from it. An interesting take on plot development, a novel setting for the book, a knack for dialogue, any of these compliments are easy examples that won’t compromise your overarching distaste for a book. I advise civility for many reasons, not the least of which includes maintaining a positive dynamic with an author and their publisher. Even the smallest compliment can prevent a relationship from souring between a reviewer and the author or publisher of a book. Tarnishing that relationship could cause you business, not to mention readers.

Although she would love to stay with Jessie, she knows she can't until the time is right. She urges Jesse to create his world as it should be and to rise from the gutter he is in. He is worth more than that.

Jessie begins to visit a psychic, hoping for information about where his girl has gone to. The psychic reads the tarot cards and tells him that Taria loves him and wants only the best for him. She explains to Jessie that he has a bright future, if only he chooses to grasp it. She tells him that there is danger and death surrounding a male figure in his life. Jessie tries to get closer to God, to help him find his path to his destiny. But he also wants to save Angelo and find Taria. Will he be strong enough?

Delivered is a quick-paced read filled with spiritualism, dirty business, eccentric characters and a great plot. I became a champion of Jessie and his plight, which I owe to sharp and clever writing. If you're looking for a unique, but entertaining read, pick up Delivered today!

Horizon by Sophie Littlefield

It's the aftertimes, a time when a blue leaf has turned most of mankind into zombies or killed them. Cass Dollar has struggled to survive, finding safety and comfort with a man called Smoke. When Sammi, Dor's daughter, catches Cass and Dor in a compromising position, she tells the leader of New Eden's council that Cass has been drinking while watching the children. Cass loses all of her respect and any newfound friends she has made. But when the Beaters, what the zombies are called, begin to try to swim across the inlet to their island, she is one of a handful who offers to help. She and Dor make a great team, trying to kill the Beaters before they enter their safe place. However, Smoke wakes up, and their closeness is abruptly disengaged.

They decide the island is no longer safe and they must leave. Hopefully, they can find a new settlement; a safe one that they can live in with hope for their futures. The journey is filled with many dangers, not only of Beaters, but with themselves. Cass is torn loving two men; how can she choose when they both love her and Ruthie? How many will survive the journey, and if any, where will they go?

MY THOUGHTSThis is my first Moe Prager book, but it definitely read fine alone. As a mystery, it kept me glued to the pages. I wanted to know throughout the entire book what happened but no matter how hard I tried to piece it together, I had no idea what happened until it was revealed. Though the mystery of who killed Alta is the focus of the book, the back story is what really kept me going. Moe is a fascinating character study. In this book he's finding himself faced with some serious life decisions to make, as well as severe health problems. Having his past thrown at him makes things even more difficult for him. As we delved into Moe's personal life and the personal lives of those around him, they become dear friends that we can't help but love and be concerned for.

The feel of this book is what struck me the most. Instead of being the cutesy, cozy mystery of today, it has a bit more Sam Spade to it. Actually, I think it's the perfect blend of the mysteries of our grandparents and the mysteries of our children. It's right there in the middle where we find mysteries we want to solve and people we want to care about, but the tone is set so that we realize these people are untouchable realities. I strongly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys mysteries. I personally can't wait to see where Moe heads in the next book nor to pick up the previous books and see where he's been.

Shattered Dreams by Ellie James

Trinity Monsour is sixteen years old when she moves to New Orleans to live with her Aunt Sarah. Her grandmother had died, and since her parents had died when she was two, Aunt Sarah was her only remaining relative. But from growing up in a cabin in the mountains and being homeschooled doesn't prepare her for the big city and high school.

She wants to fit in, so when a group of teenagers ask Trinity to accompany them one evening to a supposedly haunted house, she agrees. When Trinity arrives though, she feels that something is wrong and that they shouldn't go in. But she doesn't want to be a freak to her possible newfound friends, so she enters the building. They ensue into a game of Truth or Dare that ends with a prank being played on Trinity, but during the prank, Trinity has a horrible vision of a young girl bleeding while lying on a mattress. Trinity is freaked out, scared and madder than a hornet at Jessica, the girl who initiated the prank of locking Trinity in the dark.

Afterword, Trinity tries to let bygones be bygones, but Jessica's boyfriend Chase confronts Trinity with an apology and to explain that he and Jessica had broken up. Chase is interested in Trinity. Trinity wants to believe in Chase but she's scared. Especially with the visions that keep coming to her in her dreams. When Jessica doesn't come home the next day, all sorts of rumors abound, namely that Trinity was seeking revenge and murdered Jessica.

Trinity knows she didn't do it, but shares her dreams with the police. The more she dreams, the more clues they receive, but the clues start to make Trinity look guilty. Furthermore, she's been learning more about where she came from and her gift. She's afraid that if Chase finds out she's a freak; he won't want to be with her anymore. Can Trinity figure out where Jessica is before it's too late? Can she prove she isn't crazy and she didn't hurt Jessica? Will Chase back off in horror when he realizes what Trinity can do?

Shattered Dreams is a magnificent debut young adult novel by author Ellie James. The Keeper is a wonderful read - filled with likable characters and a beautiful setting in Amish country. The troubles the characters go through and how they put their faith in God to help them through it is inspiring. The love triangles, the heartbreak of watching a parent suffer and wanting to help and the love and support of family is what makes this novel shine. I loved it!

Western Kentucky State University's football team takes the spotlight in this wonderful novel by Joseph Rinaldo. We are taken into the lives of not only the players, but also the coaches and their families. Darnell is an intelligent college student who left behind a gang and a record to make something of himself. Troy tries really hard to lead his team to victory and to make good choices, even though he slips sometimes to have fun.

The coach’s son, Eric, has Down syndrome and his mother gets the idea to have him take a sign language course. Maybe then she can have a conversation with him that includes more than grunts. His sister, Nicole, takes the class with him so she can teach their parents.

But as the team practices and goes into a new season, someone from a player's past comes to visit and brings with them tragedy and destruction. Will they be able to make the correct choices or will it be too late?

Hazardous Choices is an engaging read with an eccentric cast of characters who all bring something different to the story. There are many subplots going on that merge into the main storyline beautifully and keep the reader entranced. The only disappointment I had was the ending; it was too abrupt, although I understand why it was written in such a fashion. If you like reading about college sports and about choices that can change your life, you'll enjoy Hazardous Choices.

The Night Swimmer by Matt Bondurant

Fred and Elly have a good life, but it's busy. So when Fred wins an Irish Pub in Ireland in a dart competition, they decide to pack it all up and move. Fred studies up on how to run a pub, and Elly is anxious to swim in the waters. She's a long distance swimmer and she's extraordinarily good at it. She has a skin condition that gives her a higher fat density, making it easier for her to float and not drown.

When they arrive, it takes a while to get the pub, called the Nightjar, into working order. While Fred works with various contractors to get the pub ready to open, Elly goes to Cape Clear, a nearby island. There, she stays at a bed and breakfast and begins to know the locals and about the ancient clan, descended from Irish saints, who have ruled the island for centuries.

What Elly really wants to do is swim the Fastnet, a dangerous endeavor. Also, Elly keeps seeing a strange man with no arms walking the fences at night, leading a pack of goats. When she questions the locals about it, they regard her curiously. They haven't seen that person and have no idea who she is talking about.

Meanwhile, Fred is trying to write a novel and spend time with Elly when it allows. Elly misses Fred as well, but her swimming seems to have taken over most of her time. But as the two of them find their lives immersing more with the locals, danger begins to surround them. As it accelerates, their marriage begins to crumble.

With a cast of likable and original characters, a dramatic and beautiful backdrop, a dangerous feud and a local intrigue, The Night Swimmer is a unique journey with complex plotting. Powerful, beautiful writing and remarkable storytelling, you won't want to miss this exciting novel!

The year is 2076. Most of mankind is dead. Years ago, the Partials were created, part machine and part human, to help win the Isolation War. They were successful and the Partials returned home. But the Partials were treated as outcasts, they were different, and they became angry. They wiped out most of humanity, not only by killing them but by releasing a virus, called RM that not only killed, but prevented anyone from procreating.

Kira Walker is only sixteen but she is a medical intern. She works in maternity, observing everything when a new baby is born. The infant never lives, the virus takes immediate possession and the babies are always dead before they are three days old. The Senate has passed The Hope Act, a law that demands that any female eighteen or older must be pregnant. The Senate figures the more babies they have, eventually they will either get one who is immune to the virus or someone will find the cure.

Kira believes that to cure RM, they need to go to the source. But going into Partial territory is a death sentence. Not only would they possibly instigate a new war, but no one has seen a Partial in eleven years and it is certain death. Kira, though, when she finds out one of her best friends is pregnant, decides to take matter into her own hands. Although she has been forbidden to go, she and a group of friends go anyways. They are successful to a degree, but fail in other areas. Some of the group dies on the journey, but they do bring back a Partial. However, the Senate wants it disposed of before Kira can perform her tests. Will she be able to convince them to let her try? Or will they kill the Partial and take with it every possible chance they had to prevent their species from dying out?

I have to say I absolutely loved this book! Kira is a great heroine, but her circle of friends makes her better. The world in 2076 is rugged, dangerous and believable. Dan Wells spins a yarn so filled with detail; you can picture it in your mind. With romance, conspiracy, politics, adrenaline-charged action scenes and a heroine with a heart of gold, Partials is a wonderful addition to the apocalyptic dystopian genre. I hope there is a sequel!

Nobody Knows the Spanish I Speak by Mark Saunders

One day I came home to find Arlene explaining in Spanish to our housekeepers, Ana and Maria that we were moving the following week to a new house one street over. When she finished, our two housekeepers jumped up and cried. They hugged us and cried some more. Arlene asked me what she had just said. I told her I believed she said we'd just bought them a new house and they could move in the following week.

MY THOUGHTSThis book follows the life changes that Mark and his wife, Arlene, go through as they realize life isn't exactly what they want it to be. They pack up their suburbanite lives and decide to head down to Mexico and live off their nest egg for a while in search of finding their true selves and happiness. From the very beginning, bad omens thwart their move.

The first thing that strikes you about the book is Mark's dry, yet witty, sense of humor. At the beginning of each chapter is a comic strip that will leave you with a smirk throughout the entire chapter. Each chapter, while giving you a sense of who the author and his wife are and all of their internal struggles, will entertain you. Basically, this is a look at the meaning of life from a humorous perspective. In all fairness, several of us would cringe over sleeping with scorpions, but that's not really the point.

I strongly suggest this book for anyone who enjoys a light, funny read. You can go more in depth and really put yourself into the situations and struggles of Mark and Arlene if you choose, but it's not necessary. You can enjoy this as a good time or you can pull a lesson out of it. Either way, this book is guaranteed to make you smile.

This impressive piece of fiction wouldn't let me stop reading. Joseph's story is well-told and fascinating. The characters are real and will touch your heart. There is some real intensity stored in these pages, as well as wisdom just waiting for anyone willing to look for it. Taking the religious aspect out of it, this story shows us some valuable life lessons. Adding the religious aspect back in, it will take you on a spiritual journey that will force you to face yourself at your most vulnerable. There's also a handy study guide at the end to aid in asking yourself questions or beginning a discussion.

Warren cleans her up the best he can but fears she may have swallowed some glass and wants to take her to the hospital. But the truck engine is iced over so they decide that they'll see how she does overnight and decide what to do the next morning.

Tess wakes up in the middle of the night coughing up a lot of blood. Scared, Warren bundles up and decides to hike to their nearest neighbor, three miles away, for help. But while he is gone, monsters made from ice invade the house. Tess and the dog battle for their lives.

Warren is attacked by the ice creatures on his hike, but is saved by his neighbors, but after he takes a thorough beating. But on the snowmobile with the neighbors, they are attacked again. Warren just wants to get back to his wife to ensure her safety, but no one can survive in the storm, especially with killing ice creatures after them. Or can they?

Freeze is a chilling tale that will remain with you long after the last page is turned. I could easily see this made into a movie - the action and the tense situations are treated with just the right amount of drama and emotional appeal. Fans of horrific suspense will savor Freeze! I can't wait to read more from this talented author.

ETHEREAL INFLUENCE: THE BIRTH by Lana Bradstream

Through-out the pregnancy they visit with Adrian's brother James and his wife Carol a lot. So when Carol brings over some friends that Laura has never met on the day she is to be induced, she is a bit angry. But nothing will ruin her perfect day, so she pushes her feelings to the back of her mind.

The delivery is pretty smooth and soon Laura and Adrian are holding their new baby daughter Kaylynn in their arms. But their blessing soon turns into a nightmare when hours later, the doctor informs them that Kaylynn has passed away with no apparent causes. The death of their child shocks Adrian and Laura and the tragedy threatens to tear their marriage apart.

Rather than spend time with one another grieving, they each grieve on their own. Laura throws herself into her work and while away on a conference, meets Ben. MY THOUGHTS
I have to give total props to Garner for creating a new scenario for the otherworldly characters we love so much. Vamps, werewolves, etc. are all actually aliens that have come through the rift and taken over human beings. Some mythology is correct, some isn't. Now that prets (the otherworldly), have come out into the open, both they and humans are trying to find a way to co-exist. It's a great idea and was probably the one saving grace of this book, but I wish it had been executed better.

The storyline is slow and doesn't flow. I had to force myself to keep reading page after page. The characters are average, nothing overly exciting. Their rapport is average. The mystery is slow to develop. Honestly, I had had a really hard time staying interested in this book. Vamp, werewolf and demon lovers may get a kick out of this, but don't expect it to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Season of the Shadow is an amazing and intriguing romantic suspense! I was captured from page one into the lives of Fletcher and Kyndee and didn't stop until the last page. The characters are complex and realistic, lending authenticity to the time of the story. As the plot develops, the intrigue deepens and there are twists and turns keeping this reader entranced. I totally loved it!!

As Perry and Aria journey to their destination, they become to know one another. Most dwellers and outsiders don't like one another at all, but they know that each of them is the other's only hope. Pebbled with danger, set in a unique and fantastic world and a touch of romance, Under the Never Sky is a phenomenal read! Highly recommend!!

Jesus -- The Reason For the Season

Through the narrow scope of 2000 years, Mary, the mother of Jesus, appears to be one lucky woman. Chosen by God to give birth to His son, the Savior of the world? All right, Mary, way to go.

“Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you,” Gabriel said.

How many of us would like a declaration like that? Highly favored. The Lord is with you. But Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.

The angel told her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Mary’s seems confident and resolved when she responds, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.”

She’d just been told the Holy Spirit will come upon her, that God’s power will overshadow her, that she’d become with child even though she wasn’t married, and she said, “I’m the Lord’s servant. Let your words be true.”

I find this amazing! A young woman. Ancient Bethlehem. Unwed mother. They stoned women for such things in her day. But Mary believed in God. And submitted to His will. He gave her the Holy Spirit – the same Holy Spirit given to us. If He gave her confidence, He will give us confidence. Even though, like Mary, our situation seems impossible.

Listen to Mary’s song later on in the first chapter of Luke.

“My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me Holy is his name…”

Conceiving a child out of wedlock, by Divine intervention. Not a girl’s every day existence. Yet she had a Yes in her heart to God. She rejoiced. She boldly said, “Generations will remember me!”

How we struggle to trust God with our children. Our finances. Our emotional well-being. We worry. We fret. And wonder why we have no peace.

Christmas is the season where words like joy, peace and love are bantered around like Christmas candy. Let’s not take them as just words, but as truth. Let’s be like Mary and embrace God’s favor on our lives. Boldly declare "He’s done great things for me!”

Out of the grit of our own souls, we can reach His heart, and feel Him reaching for ours. No matter the pain of our past, present or future, God is there for us. He is able. Best of all, He is willing. “My soul glorifies the Lord this Christmas!”

The Panhandler's Breath

He slipped in sideways between the closing elevator doors, as if he were late to a meeting; he pressed the "5" without looking. Instead of suit and tie, though, baggy pants and faded navy hung on his tall, slim frame...and his stealth entry stiffened the hairs on the back of my neck.

I had noticed him a few seconds earlier, just after we had parted a sea of clamorous teens. He was smiling, grandfatherly, standing maybe 30 feet away where the electric shuttle picks up.

I had no idea he had been watching us, studying us, predator patiently awaiting his next prey.

The four of us were sealed in a four- by six-foot metal tomb. Tomb--that thought really scampered across my mind. I wondered if he had a knife in his pocket. I wanted to protect my son. Fight or flight pumped adrenaline but there was no where to run.

Extreme and ridiculous, these thoughts - and more - flashed through my mind. The Stranger began speaking.

"Yessir, I see you're a family man with your wife and your son here..." and he nodded in my and my son’s direction.

"...you see I'm homeless and all I've got..." and on queue, he reached into his left pocket and pulled out two old pennies blackened with age. Two cents to his name?! It was all too contrived, too practiced, and I didn't believe a word he was saying.

It was then I smelled it ~ the small space lent itself to that ~ and I doubted my doubt.

His breath.

It wasn't the scent of alcohol. His eyes weren't red, his voice didn't waver; his wizened face matched his graying hair.

His breath was morning's, zoo breath, the pet name I'd given to the scent inhaled when kissing my children awake when they were little.

He needed to brush his teeth. I wondered how long it had been since he brushed his teeth.

The elevator door opened and I handed him my leftover pizza as my son and I brushed past him. My husband handed him a bill and the Stranger thanked and God blessed him.

The elevator door closed behind us. Conflicted, I was relieved.

We got in the car and blurted first reaction--

"I didn't believe a word he said."

"That made me nervous."

"I wonder if he'll really eat the pizza."

In the quiet, we were left to our own thoughts, contemplating the right thing to do. At the end of the day, this is what I decided: It doesn't matter whether or not his story is true; for an old man to resort to begging, he has to be desperate. The money my husband gave him will never be missed. It was a reminder we've been entrusted with much and given much. Materially, yes, but more so spiritually. Loved, chosen, forgiven, redeemed, graced, lavished--every spiritual blessing. E v e r y.

There's a part of me that wishes I would have been brave enough to ask the man his story, made sure he knew he was loved...and bought him a tooth brush.

Later, it occurred to me he could have been an angel. Doesn’t that mean generosity, kindness and hospitality is always the right response? Then it's not about you or the stranger or the circumstance, it's about a simple, God-glorifying response.

Had we entertained an angel unaware? We'll never know.

But it wouldn't be the first time the Breath of Heaven smelled like a zoo.

Inside Out Christmas

My veterinarian friend, Dr. Katie, tells the story about the December when a woman brought a very sick black lab into her clinic. The dog was only ten months old, so she was really just a big puppy, but she’d been vomiting incessantly and her worried owner didn’t know what was wrong.

“Why don’t you go on home?” Dr. Katie told the owner. “I’ll need to run tests for about four hours. We’ll give you a call when we’re finished.”

Dr. Katie’s assistant took x-rays and hung them on the light panel for Dr. Katie to examine. Hmm. Something looked a little peculiar. Dr. Katie called her assistant over.

“Is it just me, or does that look like a … a camel to you?” she asked incredulously.

“Matter of fact, it does,” replied the astute assistant. “And look, there’s an angel here, a shepherd there, and down there in the colon, it’s Baby Jesus!”

At that moment the phone rang. It was the dog’s distraught owner. “I can’t believe this! I just got home and glanced at the coffee table where I put my manger scene yesterday. There’s nothing there but an empty stable!”

As I thought about this quite literal technique for internalizing the true meaning of Christmas, it occurred to me that sometimes I have the opposite problem. With all the bustling busyness, my inner joy in celebration of my savior’s birth never really makes it to the outside.

Oh, I have plenty of glittery, festive evidences of the holiday in decorations, baking galore, and gifts under my tree. But those things are for show. They’re merely the pretty wrappings, not the gift itself.

Can people really see the core-deep joy that radiates within me when I think of the true gift that Papa God sent the world in his son, Jesus? Is my immeasurable gratitude for eternal life evident as I dash through this hectic season?

I’m afraid all too often, the answer is no.

I’m just too preoccupied to allow my outside to reflect my inside so that nonbelievers recognize that I rejoice because of the hope that is within me. My joy is obscured by the mounds of clutter. Gratefulness is sucked out of my soul by the vacuum called urgency.

“But let the godly rejoice. Let them be glad in God’s presence. Let them be filled with joy” (Psalm 68:3, NLT).

This verse has become my prayer this Christmas season – that I would make the time to give priority to rejoicing, being glad in God’s presence, and letting my inner joy show for those who may be silently desperate to know the giver of true joy.

Yep, there’s a better way to internalize the gift of Christmas than the black lab technique. We can lodge the Little Lord Jesus in our hearts rather than our colons.

MY THOUGHTS
I don't think anyone in this world enjoys 'live' books as much as I do. I've long been a proclaimer that you should shove as much joy and adventure into each day as possible. This is one of the most uplifting and motivating 'live' books that I've read to date. Hampton gets right to the point of the subject of each chapter with zeal and in a manner that will appeal to anyone. You don't have to be a genius to understand the concepts presented here.

Each chapter is short and to the point but also filled with several good examples as well as relevant quotes. Hampton pulls in everything from Carmelite nuns to pop culture references. No matter your background, each chapter is presented in a manner that will appeal to you, as a reader, personally.

Even if you're a 'live' junkie like I am, there's something important in this book for you. Of course, if you're a couch potato who goes to work, watches TV, and sleeps, I strongly recommend you read this book and pass it on to everyone you know. For me, it was a simple 'playing dumb' concept that struck me. Though I agreed with everything I read in the book, this concept really struck me because I'd been doing it and not even realizing it. Now I can take that and utilize it in the rest of my life. Read, read, and read!!!

I love this time of year because it's the season of baking and eating! My hips don't, of course, but my mouth does. I had the opportunity to try the Tropical Traditions Thick Steel Cut Oats and I have been busy busy in the kitchen! Simple or Sparkle?

It’s a simple ornament made of thin cheap metal and it looks quite out of place on our CHRISTmas tree. But each year I lovingly and safely nestle it amongst its expensive and sparkly peers, without a care as to how unglamorous it appears.

Many of our CHRISTmas ornaments have a story and an uncanny way of welling up emotion in me, but this certain one causes an intense stir.

You see the ornament is engraved with the name of my grandmother, Sara, and was given to me by my mother, who ordered it from Hospice, after Grandmama’s death. Yes, the months leading up to her death carry memories of a frail and failing grandmama, but that ornament carries my thoughts to sweet CHRISTmas memories of the past.

CHRISTmas Eve dinners in her home, laughing, singing, gathering and celebrating a year filled with blessings as we remembered the birth of our Savior. CHRISTmas mornings, she was always there participating with glee, in our raucous CHRISTmas happiness. Her gifts were always bank envelopes gently tucked into the pine needles of our CHRISTmas tree, fresh cut from the property she grew up on.

All memories of my Grandmama make my heart swell. You see she was my Jesus with skin on. She lived her life full of joy, serving others and approached life selflessly with an attitude of, “What can I do for you?”

Just months before she left us, even as the Alzheimer’s was robbing her mind she shared her love of Jesus with a sweet little old lady friend, who came to know the Lord – a divine appointment. The very next day that little old lady silently slipped away to meet in person the One Sara introduced her to just the day before.

At the time I wept, realizing that regardless of our own frailties and failings, God can still use those of us who are willing to do His work and are well practiced at hearing His voice...no matter our lack of sparkle in comparison to others.

A simple life lived for Him, a simple ornament in memory of Sara...a simple truth for you to ponder.

We sit poised on the top of a cliff, a near drop off before us, that falls to a rushing river. In the middle, a bridge of snow and ice hints at our destination. My husband guns the snowmobile engine. “Ready?”

Ready? For a face plant into a tree, maybe reconstructive surgery? To feel my stomach ripped from my body as we plummet down the mountain? Let’s do it!

We live on five acres of woods in northern Minnesota that butts up to a national forest. Hence, our backyard is about a hundred thousand acres. Aside from harboring deer, lynx, fox, cougar and bear, it also makes excellent snowmobile terrain. And not long ago, Mrs. Claus gave her Santa a snowmobile for two.

I love snowmobiling. Flying over the snow, catching air over drifts. I love to drive, to be at the helm of the beast as I weave around trees and over hill and dale, my husband sitting behind me. I also love riding behind my husband as he drives, feeling those powerful arms as he’s muscling the snowmobile into the wilds. We follow unknown trails, driven by a Magellan spirit, hoping that we have enough gas to get us back to civilization. I love hanging on, simply trusting him, knowing that wherever he’s taking me, he’s going first.

But there are times, when I see where he’s taking me, and I just have to bury my head in his back. Like straight down a cliff.

However, my heart cheers, despite the terror as we gun it down the hill, over the river, up the opposite side. And, if we hadn’t let ourselves go, we would have never discovered the beauty of a winter river, a hidden jewel buried deep in the forest. Nor the exhilaration of facing the challenge together.

Further on, we find an enchanted forest of towering white pine. Catch a view of Lake Superior, discover an old cabin in the woods.

It occurs to me that snowmobiling is much like my spiritual life. Occasionally, I drive, and it’s me setting our course, weaving through the trees, getting us hopelessly lost. But when God takes the “wheel” and I hang on, trusting Him for the speed and destination, I see the scenery. I trust him to keep me safe. I trust him to bring me home, where there is an eternal supply of hot chocolate.

As Christmas season becomes more hectic, what if I let God drive? Maybe everything doesn’t have to be perfect, and maybe I don’t have to control every tradition, every holiday nuance. What if I just held on for the ride?

I’ll bet I’ll still get there, and I might even enjoy the scenery along the way.

I have to admit that this is one of the most unpredictable books that I've read and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Every once in a while a book comes along with the 'wow' factor. This book totally met all of my criteria for that. From the opening page, I was struck by the sheer beauty of the writing. Each word is skillfully set aside another to paint not only a creative image in your head, but a love of the written word as well. Each page will force you to continue to read the next, leaving you breathless in anticipation at times. The characters are forged with an anvil of understanding that no reader can deny. From the main cast to those poor background creatures that seldom pop in, you'll find yourself in a world full of empathy and longing. The entire world of Victoria called to me, and not always in a good way. I found myself laughing and crying, but mostly seething with anger and injustice. By the end of the book, I'd have given nearly anything to climb inside Vic's world and right a few wrongs.

This is a definite book for anyone. I guarantee that there's a character you can identify with. Hopefully, it'll help you learn a little something about yourself as well. Join Vic on her journey towards self-discovery and allow yourself to be swept up.

Family Traditions: A Glimpse into Christmas Future

Have you ever thought about family traditions? As I helped my 1-year-old place ornaments on the Christmas tree this year I imagined her doing the same thing with her children—and maybe even grandchildren—one day. Traditions are beliefs and customs handed down through generations. By sharing meaningful moments with your kids you're sending yourself into the future. How amazing is that?

Sharing family traditions cause us to slow down from the busy, adult world for a while. We ignore the laundry to set out the nativity set with our kids. We set aside time in our schedules to drive around and look at Christmas lights.

Holiday traditions aren't only fun, they also help strength family bonds. Through traditions kids trust in the security of family unit. They think, “This is our family and this is what I do.” Of course, the most important thing to share isn't just what we do ... but why. Why do we put out a nativity? To remind us the real meaning of the season—Jesus coming to earth. What do the Christmas lights represent displayed on homes and on trees? They represent the Light of the World, Jesus.

Using traditions to bond our families and share our faith isn't new. I love these two Scriptures that talk about that very thing.

Exodus 12:25 says, “When you enter the land that the LORD will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony.”

Psalm 78:4 says, “We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done.”

Let The Baby Grow Up This Christmas

When I was a little girl, Christmas seemed to take forever to make its way back to our little house on the end of a dirt road called Bull Run in northeast Louisiana. We kids started counting down the days before the leaves ever began turning. Sure, the adults said it came once a year but I wasn't so sure. Once Santa Claus left our humble abode it seemed like light years before he found his way back to the Delta.

That was a child's perspective. I imagine it hasn't changed all that much for today's kids. On the other hand, I'm operating under a completely different time frame these days. It seems like it was just yesterday when I pulled the boxes down from the attic and began pulling out the nativity scene, the miniature lights, and the keepsake ornaments. And now, just that fast-- Christmas Day is right around the corner. Soon the tree will be striped naked and the piled up presents will all be distributed. After a few more day it'll be hard to remember who got what from whom, and once again, I'll start packing all the decorations away for another year.

I was thinking about how bare and cold the house always looks after the holidays when I realized that, sadly, this scene would play itself out in many hearts as well. A lot of people will have had expectations that weren't filled and many of those same souls will be left with hurts that don't seem to heal. Unless this year is remarkably different from past seasons, my bet is, the New Year will bring magazines full of articles on combating depression and the talk shows will have experts on offering ways to fill the long days ahead and cure the winter blues.

I'm no expert, dear readers, but I'd like to offer you a suggestion that will go far beyond the creature comforts of a nice warm bath or a delicious bowl of hot soup. Your heart doesn't have to be bare and naked after the holidays. Do you want to know the real secret? It's simple, really. Don't pack up Christ with Christmas! As beautiful and special as the Christmas story is, it's only a part of heaven's miracle. The Christ child grew into a man and the man became a Savior.

This year, may we be determined to let the babe from Bethlehem live on in our hearts. If we'll allow Him to become the Messiah He was born to be, the joy of Christmas can be ours all year long.

The Snowflake Party

The first snow of winter hasn’t fallen yet, but in our kitchen tonight we’re doing a pretty good imitation. The whole family is circled around the huge old oak table. The snip, snip, snip of scissors is background music as tiny scraps of white paper float down, making our floor look like a giant brownie sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Tonight has turned out to be the night for our annual Snowflake Party, a tradition that began when our children were toddlers. There has never been a date blocked out in red on our calendar, but one day we wake up and the brisk autumn air has turned bitter cold. Naked tree branches trace their stark calligraphy on a dull grey sky and we need a taste of the joyful promises of Christmas and snow. It’s the perfect time for a party.

On such a day, one of the kids will fly in the back door, fresh home from school, and declare “Hey, Mom! Tonight would be a good night for the Snowflake Party!” First we round up every pair of scissors in the house. This is one time when sharing is not a virtue. While the kids search for scissors, I cut white paper into squares and fold them caddy-corner multiple times. The resulting triangles are artfully arranged in a basket, awaiting the beginning of the party.

Later, while the supper dishes dry on the counter, I recruit a volunteer to help me stir up a big pot of hot cocoa. For the next hour it will warm on the back burner, tantalizing us with its aroma.

Now the fun begins with careful cutting and snipping, shaping plain white paper into intricate works of art. Each snowflake we create seems as unique and spectacular as the genuine variety created by God himself. As each masterpiece is unfolded, collective oohs and aahs go up.

When the last dregs of our creative juices are drained, Dad oversees the vacuum patrol while I pour cocoa into generous mugs. We spread our handiwork on the floor around us and sit, quietly admiring our work while we dunk marshmallows and sip rich chocolate.

With empty mugs piled up in the sink, it’s time for the judging to begin. There will be awards for ‘prettiest’, ‘most unusual’, and as many other categories as we need for everyone to be a winner. Dad is the judge because he studied art in college. He also usually wins one of the top prizes––because he studied art in college.

Snowflakes deemed runners-up might be pasted in scrapbooks or hung on the refrigerator. A few even “melt” into the trash that very night. But the winners are taped proudly to the picture windows in the living room for passersby to enjoy while they long for the day when genuine snowflakes will color the world clean and white.

Our oldest daughter went away to college last September. She called just after Thanksgiving to tell me that her dorm window was covered with snowflakes. No, not the real thing, but the ones she remembers from her childhood––paper ones that she spent an entire evening cutting and snipping while sipping hot cocoa.

That’s the neat thing about traditions: They go with us no matter how far from home we travel.

Q. What's your favorite holiday?

A. Gosh, I am such a festive girl it's tough to chose. I adore Halloween! And Thanksgiving is such a cozy time. And who can resist the smell of a Christmas tree? This year, I think Christmas might win out. I have an 18 month old grandson who is gonna find out exactly how nice he is Christmas morning!

Q. Do you write with music? Why or why not?

A. I don't. I'm an everything-has-got-to-be-still kind of writer. I love the sound of the weather beating against the window that sits over my writing desk, though. And a crackling fire does wonders for my writing.

Q.What are your comfort books, books that you can read again and again, that foster and rekindle your desire to write?

A. Once I've read a book, if it impacts me, I don't go back and read it again. I absorb it.

Q.What do you see as the influences on your your writing?

A. My crappy childhood, for one. Trying to understand some of the pain I experienced during my younger years is great motivation. Also everyday life influences me. The plight of people. And their bravery in seemingly insurmountable situations inspires me. Especially children's courage.

Q.Can you share a little of your current work with us?
A. I'm just finished a mother/daughter tale set in the horse world. Many of my stories are told through the eyes of a child, in this one we get a mother's take.

Q.Is their anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
A. Finding balance. The right amount of narration vs. dialogue. The correct amount of humor vs. drama. There is so much to keep in mind when creating a story.

Q.What, in your opinion, are the most important elements of good writing?

A. Engagement with the reader. A story needs to feel approachable. And authentic. I also appreciate a nice twist of events. And pacing is key. I want a story to move along at a nice clip.

Q.What were your feeling when you first saw the cover of your first novel?

A. (Laugh) I wasn't bowled over. The girls on the cover, Sally and Troo, were both blond on the first cover. It's a key plot point within the story that Troo be a redhead. It took time to convince my publisher to see it as important, but I eventually did. When that book, that cover, arrived at my home, I burst into tears.

Q.What tools do you feel are a must-have for writers?

A. It's so important to read. To learn from other writers. To see how they craft their stories.

Q. Anything else you'd like to add?

A. Just a holiday hug to all!

I was born in Milwaukee and spent my early years in a great working class neighborhood, much like the one where Whistling in the Dark and Good Graces are set.

I attended Marquette University for one year, fell in love, and followed my boyfriend to New York City. I lasted about six months. I was so intimidated, I spent most of my time running from my apartment to the grocery store and back to my apartment, which was located above a 24 Hour Soul Record Store. Hence, I have the dubious ability to recite every lyric to every James Brown tune ever recorded.

After returning to Milwaukee, I enrolled in the University of Wisconsin where I majored in Radio and Television. I fell into a job as a morning drive DJ on one of the country's first alternative radio stations—WZMF. I got to interview lots of very cool rock n' rollers like Frank Zappa, Hendrix and John Lennon.

In 1976, I moved to Los Angeles, where I began a ten year career working for Licorice Pizza record chain where I produced, wrote and voiced thousands of commercials as Lesley from Licorice Pizza. When I set out to expand my career, I ended up doing on-camera commercials, a couple of Movies-Of-The-Week, and a Laverne and Shirley.

I met my husband, Peter aka Sushi Man, in Malibu, which is pretty funny considering he was from Milwaukee as well. While we both loved living in California, after the birth of our kids, Casey and Riley, we felt this overwhelming need to return to the roost, so we moved back home in 1990.

Well, that's about it. Oh, wait. The writing. I adore it. I crave it. But it wasn't until Casey went off to college, and teenage Riley made it clear that any form of communication between us was to be restricted to—"With or without pepperoni"—that I found the opportunity to sit down and let 'er rip. I hope you love reading Whistling in the Dark, Land of a Hundred Wonders, Tomorrow River and Good Graces as much as I loved writing them.

Why I Decorate for Christmas

An old cassette tape of Christmas carols—received in a package twenty years ago when we had first arrived in France as missionaries—fills our den with delightful piano music as I place one more ornament on the already over-laden Christmas tree. This one is a little white wooden rabbit with pink ears that move back and forth. It actually doesn’t look much like a Christmas ornament, but I bought it for our baby Andrew when my husband Paul was in seminary, and I was working for less than minimum wage in the library. This ornament was literally all I could afford.

As I hang it on the tree today, I get goose bumps and then a rush of warmth. And that’s why I decorate for Christmas. Not to impress but to remember. I remember those lean, lean years, and God’s faithful provision for us.

There are the cross-stitched ornaments I made our first year in Montpellier—for the boys (for by now we had two sons) and Paul and me. How I ever had time to do that, I don’t know. I remember our puny little tree—the kind they sold in France back then—in a pot so that it could be replanted later. We perched that tiny tree on a small table out of baby Christopher’s reach. I guess I watered it too much, because about halfway through December, it started smelling and then stinking, and it rotted there on Christmas Day!

I smile with these memories.

I look at the other ornaments on the tree. Many were purchased—one for each boy—when we attended conferences around Europe, and that makes me smile too. Getting to travel on a missionary’s budget to exotic places! There are the waxed red bear and red baby carriage from Wales, the brightly painted clay sun and moon from Portugal, the blue and white porcelain windmill and wooden shoes from Holland, the hand-blown glass Snoopys sitting on gondolas from Venice, and the delicately decorated eggs from Prague.

Other ornaments include the little pinkish shiny ball ornament with Paul’s name written in glitter—I think he made it when he was about six , and the little red velvet bows, bought at Michael’s after Christmas one year for a dollar. They bring a unifying theme to the tree. I say this, smiling, because our tree is, and has always been throughout the years, a hodge-podge of our life. And I like it that way. I don’t think I could ever have a ‘theme’ tree. Mine is a ‘memory’ tree.

The music plays softly in the background and I smile through tears, remembering God’s incredible faithfulness to call and keep us here in France for so many years. Heart-breakingly hard years, overwhelmingly joyful years—the same years, the same amazing God, our keeper.

Before we left for the mission field, I memorized Psalm 121 in English and in French, and over the years I have held on tight to those last beautiful words of the psalm: The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever. (NASB)

Of course He will. He is God with us.

We decorate to remember Christmases past, our lives, our legacy, and mostly, for those of us who have embraced Christ, we decorate to honor and praise Him for coming to us—Emmanuel! We make our homes ready to receive the Christ Child, with soft music and candles burning and the sweet flickering of angel wings on an over-laden evergreen.

Where is Comfort and Joy Found?

The year 2006 ushered unwelcome emotions into my life. My husband was unhappy in his job, two of my grown children were making poor choices, my mother-in-law was showing signs of Alzheimer’s, extended-family issues were surfacing, and I was writing a book. Things only got worse. Much worse.

Early in 2007, I was asked to represent the mentoring ministry for wives I founded, Beautiful Womanhood, and lead a women’s conference in Uganda, Africa. My husband wasn’t sure if traveling to Africa was a good idea, so we committed it to prayer. While we were listening for an answer, I sensed God asking me to fast from spending, except for groceries, for thirty days. Sometimes you know that you’ve heard God’s voice because you’d never have come up with those words on your own. This was one of those times. I’d never heard of a fast from spending. Tom needed no convincing that a fast from spending came directly from the mouth of God. He still gets excited just thinking about it!

During the fast, it became clear I had used spending as a way to gain a comfort fix. When I was spending money, I felt carefree and lighthearted. Instead of dwelling on the unpleasantness in my life, I was thinking of my purchases and how they would bring me pleasure. Not until I stopped spending did I realize how short-lived the fix really was. During the fast, when I felt the urge to spend—to anesthetize my pain—I pictured myself running into the arms of Jesus, the Great Comforter. Oh, what comfort I received!

One night, I told good friends my experience of gaining comfort through the power of the Holy Spirit rather than money. I exclaimed that I had never felt so comforted. One friend then told us about a dream he’d had shortly after hearing about the invitation from Uganda. After the dream, he had awoken and recorded the following thoughts:

“. . . this is for Sandy. Christ’s redemption of women is beautiful. Beautiful Womanhood is a result of redemptive wholeness. The visuals the ministry uses on the books, etc., are like a piece of beautifully veneered furniture. There is something going on with the ministry to the brokenness of abused women. In Uganda, there are hurting, abused women, and something is connecting their need and Beautiful Womanhood. Though there is nothing wrong with veneer, it is only the topping—the covering, and without good structure it is shallow and will not hold up. It is time to add a new depth to the ministry.”

Then these verses came to my friend’s mind:

All praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the source of every mercy and the God who comforts us. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When others are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. You can be sure that the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 NL

When my friend was finished sharing, everyone in the room broke down in tears, praising God for His work in my life. I’d learned to listen and God had spoken. I’d obeyed, and He’d acted. When He acted, I was changed.

Needless to say, I packed my bags and experienced some of the best days of my life in Uganda—offering God’s comfort to His troubled women.

Revolutionary or Royalist?

This December 1st marked the 250th anniversary of Marie Grosholtz’s birth. And while that name may not be immediately recognizable, Marie’s married name – Madame Tussaud – is probably one of the most famous in French history. It comes as a surprise to many people that the name behind the famous wax museums actually belonged to a real woman. Born in 1761, Marie grew up in a middle-class family on the Boulevard du Temple in Paris. As the daughter of a prominent wax artist who had friends in every walk of life, her family entertained impoverished young lawyers and hobnobbed with royals like the Duc d’Orléans. It was a rich and incredibly varied existence for Marie on the Boulevard. One day she might be dressed in a towering white pouf for a visit with the queen, while the next she might be working in a dirty artist’s apron. She knew how to curtsy and how to spice venison for stew, and was as comfortable in her uncle’s Tuesday evening salons as she was in his workshop, where she modeled wax figures of the rich and famous (and sometimes infamous) for their museum.

But when discontent began to spread throughout Paris, evidenced by the heated debates which took place in her family’s weekly salons, Marie had a choice to make. Would she side with the revolutionaries who were calling for fair taxation and an end to nobility, or would she support the royal family whose patronage had turned her Parisian museum into a must-see event for both French and foreigners alike?

While writing the book, I tried to imagine what I would have done in Marie’s place. I imagined that I was an acquaintance of Marie Antoinette’s, and that I was good friends with the king’s sister, Madame Elisabeth. As the Revolution gathers support from the masses, I witness firsthand the panic gripping the Palace of Versailles. At first, the king dismisses the uprising as a few discontented rabble-rousers. But as the protests becomes more violent, he begins to realize that this is something serious – something dangerous, in fact. Still, no one around him is telling him the truth. Not about the anger, or the violence, or even the state of his own treasury. Should I risk my place at court to speak up? If so, would he even believe me? And even if he did, what would it change at this late stage? There are also my three brothers to consider, all of whom are employed in the king’s Swiss Guard. Yet for all of my royal ties, I can see the revolutionaries’ point as well. People are starving in the streets, jobs are scarce, yet the rich are exempt from taxation.

So do I wear the black and white cockade to symbolize my support of the Bourbons, or do I wear the red, white and blue for revolution? It turns out that Marie did both. As the Revolution gained steam, anyone dressed in clothing that was deemed too “fancy” was subject to arrest. To be seen in public without a tricolor cockade meant literally risking your life. And at a time when nearly 40,000 people were guillotined (more than 80% were commoners), execution was a very real threat. So while Marie kept her ties with the royal family – even when it was dangerous to do so – she was also a very public (and unintentionally influential) figure in the French Revolution.

I can’t imagine the horrors Madame Tussaud lived through during this time, but I can empathize with the very difficult choices she eventually made in an attempt to survive. I didn’t always agree with them, but Madame Tussaud is - without a doubt - one of the strongest women I will ever write about.

Advent

Consider the bride's walk down the aisle. We all know where that woman in the white is going but somehow waiting for her to arrive at the altar is an essential part of the ceremony. In fact, the waiting is so essential that even cheapskate Vegas chapels include wedding marches.

Why?

Because the wait adds meaning to the moment.

At Christmas time, we tend to forget this essential truth about anticipation. We're lost to shopping malls and checklists, rushing toward December 25th so quickly that we forget the quiet joy of the month's other 24 days -- and then we wonder why we feel so empty on the 26th, amid ribbons and wrapping paper and our best intentions.

Because the wait adds meaning to the moment.

And that is why Advent is so important to Christmas.

I'm as guilty as the next harried person. This Advent was particularly tricky because just six hours before it started, I was still trying to finish a 110,000-word novel that was written over the course of the year -- written while homeschooling my kids, keeping my hubby happy, and generally making sure the house didn't fall down around us.

It's an understatement to say my free time is limited. But waiting adds meaning, and Advent is crucial to Christmas, so I've devised several Advent traditions that are simple, powerful and easy to keep even amid the seasonal rush.

When my kids outgrew the simple Advent calendars around age 7, I stole an idea from my writer friend Shelly Ngo (as T.S. Eliot said, "Mediocre writers borrow. Great writers steal." Indulge me.)

Here's how it goes: Find 24 great Christmas books, wrap them individually and place then under the tree. On the first day of Advent, take turns picking which book to open. When we did this, we would cuddle under a blanket and read aloud -- oh, the wonder, the magic! We savored "The Polar Express," howled with "How Murray Saved Christmas," and fell silent at the end of "The Tale of The Three Trees" (note: some of the picture books I chose were not explicitly about Christmas but they always echoed the message that Jesus came to earth to save us from ourselves and to love us beyond our wildest imagination. In that category, Angela Hunt's retelling of The Three Trees definitely hits the Yuletide bull's eye).

This Advent tradition lasted for about five years. It gave us rich daily discussions about the season's real meaning, without being religious or legalistic, and it increased family couch time. But like the lift-the-flap calendars, my kids outgrew the picture books.

Because the wait adds meaning, and Advent is crucial, I prayed for another way to celebrate anticipation of Christmas. By the grace of God, last year I found an enormous Advent calendar on clearance at Pottery Barn. Made of burlap, it has large pockets big enough to hold some serious bounty.

But my husband and I didn't want the kids focusing only on the materialist stuff for Advent -- we already fight that on Christmas day. We decided to fill the daily pockets with simple necessities and small gift cards. We also printed out the nativity story from Luke 2:1-21 in a large-sized font and cut each verse out. From Day 1 to Day 21, there is one verse to read aloud. The kids memorize it, then get to open their present (again, on alternating days for each person). Then we tape the verse to the wall in order. By Day 22, all the verses are on the wall, in order, and the kids now try to recite the entire nativity story from memory. That's not as difficult as it sounds because they've been memorizing one verse each day. Still, the entire recitation -- verbatim -- usually requires Day 23 and Day 24. Whoever does memorize the entire thing -- without mistakes -- earns a bonus gift of $25.

Does that sounds extravagant?
It is.

1. Please tell us a little bit about your newest book.

Busted in Bollywood is an eclectic mix of contemporary romance/romantic comedy/chicklit/women’s fiction. Think ‘Sex and the City’ meets ‘Eat, Pray, Love’.

The book is filled with secrets and deception and laughs and romance and food! As one reader described it, ‘hilariously scrumptious!’

2. What do you feel was your greatest achievement while writing it?

Reaching the end! After writing 50-55 000 word category romances, I was seriously chuffed to complete my first mainstream novel with a significantly higher word count.

3. Can you please share with us a bit about your average day?

I’m a busy mum who runs after her boys all day, then sits down at her computer every night to write. My work ‘day’ starts at 8.30pm. Sleep is a distant memory…

4. Are you working on another book? If so, can you tell us anything about it?

I have a Harlequin Romance, a Christmas story, scheduled for release December 2012. It features a hot Aussie pro surfer and his online marketing manager, set in Torquay (home of the famous Bells Beach, about 90 minutes from Melbourne.)

I have a Harlequin Romance releasing in January, WHO WANTS TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE? (The book kicks off with the heroine chained to the hero’s precious housing development display!)

Then in February my next Harlequin Presents Extra, INTERVIEW WITH THE DAREDEVIL is released, with a George Clooney look-a-like hero. Enough said.

I’m also writing a YA novel from a male POV. Challenging!

5. Any advice for those struggling to get published?

Write, write and write some more. Don’t give up. This business is so subjective and it often involves luck: your manuscript landing in front of the right agent/editor/publisher at the right time.

Be open to criticism but stay true to your voice. Having your work over-critiqued can do more harm than good and can potentially dilute your voice. Listen to your gut.

Lastly, respect your work. Treat it how it deserves to be treated, be proud of what you write. Oh, and develop a thick skin!
