Once Bitten, Twice Shy by Jennifer Rardin

Description: I'm Jaz Parks. My boss is Vayl, born in Romania in 1744. Died there too, at the hand of his vampire wife, Liliana. But that's ancient history. For the moment Vayl works for the C.I.A. doing what he does best--assassination. And I help. You could say I'm an Assistant Assassin. But then I'd have to kick your ass.

Vayl and I have to take out a Miami plastic surgeon with ties to terrorism. But the assignment gets complicated when it turns out he's in cahoots with a supernatural nasty powerful enough to bring America to her knees.

Jasmine Parks used to be a Helsinger (vamp killer) until one day her whole world turned upside down. Now, she works for the CIA as an assassin, and she's just been promoted to the CIA's top guy, Vayl. Vayl's thousands of years old, a vampire, but he requested Jasmine to be his assistant. She isn't sure why, and he won't tell her, but she doesn't press the issue. They work well together, and the number of cars she has destroyed since working with him has dropped considerably.

Now, Jaz and Vayl are working a job to take down a plastic surgeon. But things turn nasty when politics, terrorism, and ancient supernatural forces band together to take over the world. Jaz and Vayl will need all ducks in a row to finish this one. Only one problem, Jaz has seemed to learn some new powers, and if she doesn't get back to her body in time, she won't live to see tomorrow.

I've heard wonderful things about this series, and they've been on Mt. TBR for quite awhile. On a whim the other night, I picked up this one, the first in the series. When I first started reading, I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. But, as I got further and further into the story, I found myself unable to put it down. Jaz and Vayl are two characters with so many layers to their stories, I look forward to watching them unfold as the series goes on. Mystery, romance, and supernatural all meshed together into a phenomenal story.

  2. Sounds like a great book! I've had it on my wishlist for some time...hoping it will grace the huge TBR pile in the future, lol. (Not hoping too much, as it's already over the 500 mark!...and counting!)

    Great review as well!

  5. I agree -- Rardin is hard to get into at first. The series gets better with each book. Hope you enjoy them as well.

  6. I had the same problem - trying to like the character. It took me some time, but I'm glad I stuck with it. I like Jaz a lot!!! And I can't wait to see what happens b/w Vayl and Jaz!

Thanks for the good review :)

The old grey donkey, Eeyore stood by himself in a thistly corner of the Forest, his front feet well apart, his head on one side, and thought about things. Sometimes he thought sadly to himself, "Why?" and sometimes he thought, "Wherefore?" and sometimes he thought, "Inasmuch as which?" and sometimes he didn't quite know what he was thinking about.

Thank you for taking time out of your day to leave a comment. It's appreciated.
