Jimmie Collins is a bar owner who also has another business, dealing with items that seem to fall out of trucks. His wife has MS and his grown daughter is mentally retarded. He has them both in a home in Florida while he does his thing in New York. Everyone loves Jimmie’s. Cops, secretaries, bookied, and even some of the mob visit Jimmie’s to unwind after a long day.
Nathan Melton, former NFL player, has just moved to New York and really wants to meet a lady. A mugger attempts to rob him at a staked out ATM, and he is fortunate to be saved by the cops. The cops have a drink with Nathan at Jimmie’s, and Nathan becomes quick friends with the clientale and owner. Jimmie also introduces Nathan to Teri, a real nice girl.
When Jimmie is diagnosed with cancer, he makes sure he has a trust fund set up for his ailing wife and daughter. But when the money comes up missing, the friends of Jimmie’s get into all sorts of hijinks trying to find the thief.
Last Call is a comedic mystery. I was rolling in stitches at some of the repartee, and the characters really come alive. The plot is sound, and the writing just draws you in and doesn’t let go. The mystery is revealed within the first few pages, but the why and the who and how don’t really begin to unfold until about mid-way through the novel. Seamus takes his time to paint the characters to their fullest potential before trouble breaks loose. I couldn’t put this one down and I highly recommend it!
Novelist JD Seamus has lived and worked among some of the most amazing characters ever to have walked the Earth. After decades of working in the world of retail finance, e-commerce, and venture capital, Seamus began writing a series of novels based in Manhattan.
