Guest Post: Linda Wisdom and Witches in the Workplace - With a Give-Away!!

Thank you to Wendy for having me here to talk about my witches and their jobs.

Creating a character is an overall job. Not just their looks and personalities but even their occupation, because it adds to the picture you have in your mind. And that means they need employment that fits them.

From the beginning I knew Jazz was a curse eliminator by day and limo driver by night. Very much an unusual occupation duo but it worked for her and I had fun coming up with the curses she had to banish.

Just as Stasi, with her romantic nature, loved her lingerie boutique that also offered up romance novels. You have to admit it can be fun to find sexy lingerie and pick up some erotica novels at the same time.

While Blair loves anything retro and her shop is proof of it whether it’s an original Barbie doll, a ration card from World War II or a woman’s silver hairbrush from the 1700s. Her shop allows her to dress in any time period she chooses and even add a glamour spell to intensify that look.

From here we’ll be going on to Maggie, a bounty hunter and security specialist for the Ruling Council. If a creature goes rogue, she and her team will be sent in. She’s totally kick ass and think of her steps above Buffy. She likes to say the FBI didn’t trust her and the CIA feared her. The thing is, it’s true.

And Thea, my diva romance writer witch. If anyone can write believable historical romance, you know she can. Not to mention she can use her fellow witches’ love lives. She has attitude, but there’s something about her you have to like. Fluff and Puff definitely do since she keeps them supplied with the most expensive chocolate in the world.

Have they ever had what some might call ‘real’ jobs? Oh yes. Some worked out, others didn’t. You never remind Jazz she’d once been a carhop for two hours. Graceful on roller skates she’s not. Or that Stasi worked as a ladies maid. And Thea was a lady-in-waiting to Catherine DeMedici. Maggie used glamours to pretend to be a soldier. Blair quickly learned that being a nanny wasn’t the right job for her. She may like children, but overseeing them was something else.

I like to think their past occupations led up to where they are now. They didn’t have exotic jobs. They worked hard since they couldn’t use their magick to even feed themselves. But that didn’t mean that I didn’t add some fun employment into their pasts.

And I plan to keep on doing that because it’s flat out fun. I can tell you there will be a doctor coming up, someone running another kind of specialty boutique and who knows what other surprises might come up.

So what about you? What kind of job do you think one of my witches should have? Give me some fun ideas.

Linda

  1. Good question - I think your witches should work in a broom factory or a pet shop.

  2. Hi Kaye,

I have to lol at the idea of one of them working in a broom factory. I could see all the brooms start flying around the building.

A pet shop I could see too.

  10. Hi Cheryl,

Interesting you mentioned a WWII pilot since that is part of one of the witch's past.

  11. elaing8,

I like that! And would be very appropriate too. Blair deals with retro items, antiques in a way, but not the same way as an antique shop.

  15. I'm also thinking one could work in a hospital - not only could she help heal the sick with her magical powers (let the doctors think it's their medicine) but she could also protect the witch sisterhood by helping cover up spells that have gone wrong resulting in a trip to the Emergency room...

  16. I see some great suggestions here! And it does get my imagination revving.

One of the upcoming witches is a doctor, a healer. Lili has been mentioned in previous books and she'll soon appear.

  17. How about making one of the witches a journalist? She could be slightly less than ethical and use her powers to land the story.

  20. Linda - thank you so much for blogging on my site. I really enjoy your witch series and am looking forward to the next installment!

I think a good job would be a museum curator - they've lived for centuries and I know that Blair and Staci get alot of their items from their sister's past, so maybe one of them collects rare museum quality pieces:)

  22. I always love reading about artists and their artwork - it can be painting or jewelry design or sculpture. And a witch might see or create such things to be subtly or extremely different from the way an ordinary person might view them.

She might produce very surreal, Escher-esque art. Or it might look normal but have unusual effects on people.

That was fun to think about. :)

One of your witches could work as a lawyer. It would be a handy job in getting out of trouble when spell gone awry.

The old grey donkey, Eeyore stood by himself in a thistly corner of the Forest, his front feet well apart, his head on one side, and thought about things. Sometimes he thought sadly to himself, "Why?" and sometimes he thought, "Wherefore?" and sometimes he thought, "Inasmuch as which?" and sometimes he didn't quite know what he was thinking about.

Thank you for taking time out of your day to leave a comment. It's appreciated.
