Aftershock by Jill Sorenson

THERE'S A FINE LINE  As an emergency paramedic, Lauren Boyer is dedicated and highly capable. Until an earthquake strikes, trapping her beneath the freeway with a group of strangers-including Iraq war veteran Garrett Wright...

BETWEEN PERIL AND PASSION

Handsome and take-charge Garrett aids Lauren in her rescue efforts, even as the steely look in his eyes seems to hide dark secrets. When a gang of escaped convicts goes on the attack, Garrett's bravery makes him more than a courageous bystander to Lauren. If they can save the others before time runs out, maybe, just maybe, they can explore the fire igniting between them-if the truth about who he really is doesn't pull them apart forever..

Lauren Boyer is an emergency paramedic learning to cope with a past that is affecting her current life. When she and her partner go on duty, the last thing she expects is an earthquake.  Being on an overpass, she and her partner are in the center of it all and are trapped with many others.  Lauren is badly hurt, but her partner dies. Not able to find an escape with all of the concrete and other debris from the falling freeways, Lauren decides she wants to live and puts her training into gear.

Garrett Wright is a troubled Iraq war veteran who knows he can't have a relationship with anyone.  He pairs up with Lauren to set up a base camp among the rubble until they are rescued, knowing that he can't act on his impulses, even though he finds Lauren very desirable.  She doesn't understand why he keeps putting space between them, she finds him attractive and wants to further their relationship, even though they are fighting for their lives.

Near their camp, a van with escaped convicts continues to cause trouble.  Garrett protects them and Lauren doesn't understand why.  Even when one attacks her, he saves her but he won't tell her why he keeps protecting them.  As time passes, their food and water becomes very low, and if they don't get rescued soon, their bodies may be added to the pile of the already dead.

A page-turning thriller, the feeling of helplessness and almost hopelessness leads the foray in a difficult situation made nearly impossible by several individuals. Is the romance that blossoms between Lauren and Garrett true or does it just stem from the will to survive? Although the characters are diverse and complex, it's the situation and how time with complete strangers can affect the human psych that captivated this reader.  Highly recommend!

The old grey donkey, Eeyore stood by himself in a thistly corner of the Forest, his front feet well apart, his head on one side, and thought about things. Sometimes he thought sadly to himself, "Why?" and sometimes he thought, "Wherefore?" and sometimes he thought, "Inasmuch as which?" and sometimes he didn't quite know what he was thinking about.
