The Science of Kissing By Sheril Kirshenbaum Giveaway

From a noted science journalist comes a wonderfully witty and fascinating exploration of how and why we kiss.

When did humans begin to kiss? Why is kissing integral to some cultures and alien to others? Do good kissers make the best lovers? And is that  expensive lip-plumping gloss worth it? Sheril Kirshenbaum, a biologist and science journalist, tackles these questions and more in THE SCIENCE OF KISSING. It's everything you always wanted to know about kissing but either haven't asked, couldn't find out, or didn't realize you should understand. The book is informed by the latest studies and theories, but Kirshenbaum's engaging voice gives the information a light touch. Topics range from the kind of kissing men like to do (as distinct from women) to what animals can teach us about the kiss to whether or not the true art of kissing was lost sometime in the Dark Ages. Drawing upon classical history, evolutionary biology, psychology, popular culture, and more, Kirshenbaum's winning book will appeal to romantics and armchair scientists alike.

The Radleys by Matt Haig

I've read alot of vampire novels...really.  I thought I had read it all, but apparently not.  The Radleys is a vampire novel unlike any I have read.  It's satirical, yet relative to different phases of a normal average everyday human.

The Radleys, Peter and Helen and their two teenagers, Rowan and Clara appear to be human.  They live in a regular neighborhood and the only thing that looks "off" is the fact that Rowan's bedroom light is usually on all night and there are no animals of any sort near the house.  Peter is a general doctor and Helen spends her days with her book clubs and painting.  The teens go to school just like any normal teenagers.

What's different about the Radley's though, is the fact that they are vampires and they abstain from drinking blood.  Peter is going through a mid-life crisis, Helen can't get through the day without her Ibrupropen, Clara thinks herself a vegan and Rowan spends his time reading classic poetry.  But when Clara thirsts for more than soy milk at a party and eats someone, all bets are off.

The Radleys call in an uncle, Uncle Will, who can use his knack to lure the police away from Clara.  But Uncle Will drinks blood, from the source and from the bottle.  He does not abstain and the teenagers find it calling to them.  But will they abstain like their parents have raised them or will the pressure get to them?

Amusing, entertaining, and refreshing, you will either love or hate The Radleys.  Several issues are touched upon as well as between every chapter, a verse from the Abstainer's handbook, which I found pretty delightful.  Somewhat predictable, yet again, told from a unique perspective not seen on the general market.  I thoroughly enjoyed myself!

Tropical Traditions Organic Coconut Flour Review & Giveaway

I was really excited to try Tropical Traditions Coconut Flour!! We don't use wheat flour in our house, but just your normal white flour.  It's what I was raised with and what I'm used to.  But we've been trying to get everyone in the house to eat healthier for awhile now, and I knew that this had to be better for us.

I decided to make a blueberry buckle with it.  It's not on the Coconut Recipes that Tropical Traditions has, but it was one of my dad's favorites and I had plenty of fruit in the freezer.  However, when I actually got the berries unthawed, I realized they were raspberries.  I pulled the wrong bag out of the freezer! Oh well, I was making it anyway and I'm glad I did!

The Organic Coconut Flour is semi-sweetened, so I cut back a 1/4 of a cup of sugar in the recipe.  The blend of raspberries, coconut, and spices just bursts in our mouths.  I was hoping to take a picture for you, but it was eaten too fast! Guess they do like my cooking after all lol

On a health standpoint, the Organic Coconut Flour is 100% gluten free, high in fiber and high in protein.  You see all those commercials about eating high fiber cereal.  Just put a teaspoon of the coconut flour in a glass of water, stir, and enjoy! You can also use it in smoothies and many other uses.  You can see all of the Tropical Tradition Coconut recipes here.

I am very happy with Tropical Traditions Coconut Flour.  I'm going to be using it in a roux sauce this weekend when I'm cooking. I think the flavor will be a perfect addition to a soup.

Guest Post: Stephanie Rowe- Kiss at Your Own Risk - With Giveaway

Ah…romance. Who doesn't love the feeling of your heart soaring when that special someone walks into the room? It's a sensation that is so basic to our human existence: people need to love, and they need to be loved. We want it, we need it, and we are complete when we have it. Yes, yes, yes, we all need our independence, we need to be able to look in the mirror and know who we are… but by gosh and golly, love is what makes the soul complete.

But hey, we're not here to talk about us, are we?

We're here to talk about those dangerous, deadly, tortured immortal and magically enhanced heroes and heroines of paranormal romance novels, and what it takes to bring such extreme and conflicted characters into a place of love, tenderness and happily ever after. Can immortal beings with such baggage, and such history really find their way to love as well as the protagonists in contemporary romances? Or are they too busy with saving the world to even want it?

We'll start with the Question of the Day: if you have the ability to destroy the world with a single sweep of your sword, is that enough to make your spirit whole?

Not so much.

Oh, sure, some of these big tough badasses may spout on about how every man is an island, and how all they need is a good battle and male bonding to be emotionally complete, but really? That's just a crock, a big ol' lie designed to hide their vulnerability and their burning need for a woman to love.

An immortal warrior with a fiery rod-o-love (and I'm talking about his sword, you with the racy little mind) is tougher, more independent and more tortured (often literally), than your average hero of a contemporary romance, but how different are they really? The heart, the soul, the spirit—it contains a need for a connection, a need for healing, a need for peace, no matter what the context. And sometimes, the longer a man's been isolated and deprived, the stronger his need is for salvation. Granted, that much time and angst allows him to build a hell of a wall around his emotions, and it's no easy task to break through, so thank heaven for the women of paranormal romances!

The heroines of contemporary romances are strong, independent, and courageous, but they are also burdened by their own difficult pasts, their own baggage, and their desire for a man to step up and make her feel like a woman. In paranormal romances, you have those same women, with the same attributes and needs, but the external stakes are often higher, the conflicts more intense, and the men can be a bit more of a challenge ("Oops! I'm so sorry my love, I didn't mean to almost kill you when my inner demon took over. Please forgive me?).

I've written contemporary romances (adult and young adult) as well as paranormal romances, and I've found that the interplay between a man and a woman is the same no matter what the context. Even the most deadly warriors are plagued by the same need to connect, the same emotional blocks to reaching out, and the same passion. In paranormal, it's fun to create more vivid, obvious differences and conflicts between the hero and heroine (she's an angel, he's a demon, hmm… that could be a problem), but any well-crafted romance has an insurmountable conflict or irreconcilable differences between the heroine and the hero. It's what makes a romance so special. The question is, do you like your story told in the context of proper Regency ballrooms, cutthroat corporate America, or the unpredictable wildness of a land filled with demons, vampires or, better yet, warriors who have been tortured for 150 years at the hands of Death's slightly psychotic grandma?

I vote for a century and a half of torture! What about you? What paranormal romances have you read where the romance was so vivid that it simply melted your soul?

Kiss at Your Own Risk by Stephanie Rowe

Trinity Harpswell only has to avoid killing a man for seven more days, then her Black Widow curse will finally be broken. It's been three years since she's killed a man she loved, how hard could seven more days be. Of course, that's easier said than done.
After being imprisoned in the Den of Womanly Pursuits by and evil witch for the last 150 years, Blaine Underhill is thrilled to escape from her clutches, but now he needs to save his friend that wasn't lucky enough to get out. When he tracks Trinity down to help him, she doesn't know that she may be forfeiting her own life.

Kidnapped as babies, or given away by his parents in Blaine's case, these children grew up under Angelica's (Grandma of the Devil) rule.  She enjoys torturing them or making them torture one another.  She feels that the warriors should be in touch with their feminine side, so they all have a craft; knitting, painting, flower arranging.  But the men have had enough and plan to escape.  Blaine, Nigel, Jarvis, and Christian are ready to leave Angelica and all of her shenanigan's behind, but something goes awry with their escape plan.  Christian's girlfriend betrays them and Christian is left behind.

Blaine is determined that he and the others will free Christian.  The problem is he can't do it alone.  He needs the help of the most lethal woman around.

Trinity Harpswell is cursed; she is a Black Widow  Everytime she begins to fall in love with someone,  her drive is kicked up into overdrive, somehow knowing where they are the most vulnerable, and she kills them.  But Trinity is determined to get rid of the curse forever.  She has one week left of not killing anyone to be free. But then Blaine tracks her down and convinces her to help him free Christian.

The problem is Trinity is really attracted to Blaine.  She knows that when that attraction deepens, her curse will take over and she will have to kill him.  So much for the three years she has gone murder free to dispose of her curse forever.  Will Trinity be able to help Blaine free Christian without killing him?

Full of unique paranormal creatures, humorous antics and blazing passion, Kiss at Your Own Risk kicks off a new series for Stephanie Rowe.  I look forward to the stories of the other warriors.  Sharp, wicked, and Hot!! Paranormal lovers won't want to miss this one!!

Stephanie Rowe will be here at Minding Spot on Monday, January 3rd! Don't forget to check back here for a chat and a chance to win your own copy of Kiss at your Own Risk!!

 Imua

A great Hawaiian saying is "Imua!" which means to move forward with confidence and courage. It's a great word for the upcoming new year as we explore new opportunities and perhaps face fears.

This week, I put into practice "imua" by facing my fear of ziplining. Yes, I stepped off a wooden platform to soar across 1800 feet of the world's fifth largest caldera located in Kauai. Encouraged by my teenage daughters, I faced my fear of not being in control of my destiny and took a leap of faith.

The excellent guides, Mitch and Chris of Outfitters Kauai prepared us well for our ultimate "black diamond" zipline adventure. We did several practice runs on what I thought were "big ziplines" but little did I know what was really awaiting. The guides constantly reminded us that the most important lesson we all needed to learn to be safe was to "trust our gear."

True wisdom that I needed to hear. For too long in life, I have "held on tightly" when what I should have done was to "let go and let God." He provides "the gear" that we need to sustain us through the difficult moments of life as we soar across jungles.

So I guess my advice would be this: "Face your fear and trust God's gear." IMUA!!

What fear do you need to face this year? What have you been holding on too tightly? What does "imua" mean to you?
