Convinced she’s a part of the witness protection program, sixteen-year-old Jewel Rose is shuffled around the globe with her family like a pack of traveling gypsies. After arriving at lucky home twenty-seven, she stumbles upon a mysterious boy with magical powers claiming to be her guardian . . . and warning of imminent danger. Despite the obvious sparks between them, Jewel discovers a relationship is forbidden, and the more she learns about dark, brooding Roman, she begins to question who she can even believe — the family who raised her, or the supposed sworn protector who claims they’ve been lying to her all along.
As she struggles to uncover who her family has really been running from, she is forced to hide her birthmark that reveals who she is. With new realities surfacing, unexplained powers appearing, and two tempting boys vying for her heart, Jewel battles to learn who she can trust in an ever growing sea of lies, hoping she’ll make it through her seventeenth birthday alive.

The minute I started reading I was caught up in Jewels life and had a hard time putting the story down. I made predictions along the way and was quite surprise when the usual storyline was different than the usual. In the beginning of the story, I will admit I did compare it to Sabrina the Teenage Witch. She didn't know she was a witch till it was close to her birthday. However, that is where all the similarities go. Which makes me one happy girl! Some things were the same like the love triangle that Jewel gets herself into unintentionally.
I loved how Jewel isn't a normal girl but is strives for normalcy and accepts her destiny. She is a strong female that is handed so many challenges before she turns 17. She really can't trust anybody and the people she does trust turns out to be untrustworthy. Roman who she shouldn't trust according to her family is really her only ally in this book. He has opened so many doors for her and helps keep her safe. His coven does not approve so he hides it from them, while pretending he is on his mission that he was sent to do.
However, I don't fall in love with Jewel till I realize how much she loves her brother. Even when she fines out that he really isn't her brother, she does all she can to protect him. She protects him at all cost, no matter the danger she puts herself in. She grows a s person from when you first meet her.

This sounds like a really good YA and I'm looking for those to keep my Oldest occupied since school is out so we'll definitely be picking this one up.
