Thursday at Noon by William F. Brown

Cairo, 1962. Richard Thomson is already having a very bad day when someone leaves a corpse lying on his back steps. Its head had been lopped off like a ripe melon, left on the top step where it could look down at itself. Thomson is a burned out CIA Agent and the body belongs to Mahmoud Yussuf, a petty Cairo thief who tried to sell him photographs of a long-abandoned RAF base in the Egyptian desert. What the photos have to do with a dead Israeli Mossad agent, Nazi rocket scientists, the fanatical Moslem Brotherhood, and two missing Egyptian tank regiments could start the next Arab-Israeli War. Alone and on the run, no one believes Thomson’s answers -- not the CIA, the US Ambassador, Colonel Ali Rashid of Egyptian State Security, and most assuredly not Captain Hassan Saleh, of the Homicide Bureau of the Cairo Police.

Thursday At Noon is a thrilling, adrenaline rush novel by terrific author William F. Brown.  I read and reviewed his novel, Amongst My Enemies, earlier this year and thought it was spectacular

Richard Thomson is not wanted.  The CIA doesn't and neither does the American Ambassador.   After a flubbed up case, he's been assigned to a case in Cairo, Egypt.  When he finds a beheaded man on his doorstep, Thomson finds himself in the middle of something much bigger than his screwed up case.

No one wants Thomson around, so he figures it won't matter none if he investigates.  The Arabs and the Germans are seeking the destruction of Israel and it's rumored to happen Thursday at Noon.  Can Thomson stop it and save his own life? He's already in question for the murder on his doorstep, the CIA aren't happy with him and neither is anyone else right now.  What has he got to lose?

William F. Brown pens a thrilling espionage adventure that will capture the reader from page one.  I could see the events unfold like you would in a movie, with great character depiction, vivid backgrounds and a non-stop energizing plot.  If you enjoy espionage thrillers that will keep you thoroughly entertained, pick up Thursday at Noon!

The Golden Lily by Richelle Mead

Sydney is enjoying her newfound  dorm room at the Academy, a perk from finding the bad guys and saving the day in the first book of this new series, BLOODLINES. Angeline is a dhampir who has taken over as roommate to Jill, a princess-in-hiding for vampire political reasons. Things are going pretty well, the small motley group of vampires, dhampirs and Sydney finding genuine friendship in a situation that is usually awkward.

The downfall for Sydney is the independent study she is doing for one particular teacher. The magical spells make her uneasy as she believes it is inhumane, but she struggles through it with distaste. She refuses to try any of the spells, much to her teacher's dismay. She's also watching the new relationship that Jill has made with a human. They seem to be getting really friendly, and Sydney knows the relationship can't go further than friendship. Jill's a vampire and he's human. That keeps her busy, but she's about to get even busier.

A barista, Brayden, is just like her in many ways. He uses logic for everything in his life and Sydney begins dating him. She's never dated anyone before, so she's enjoying the new social aspect of her life. Not to mention, she's been trying to help Adrian change his life. He's going to college and he's working with two others in trying to find a way for the Strigoi, very horrific vampires, to become Moroi again. The Moroi are vampires, but they are virtually harmless compared to the Strigoi.

When a new group of people come to town,
their arrival threatens one of their own. Sydney tries to do her job to the best of her ability, but this time, it may not be enough. Not to mention, she may have to question all of her beliefs if she hopes to put a halt to the threat around them. Not to mention, she's having feelings for someone that is not her boyfriend, someone forbidden to her.

THE GOLDEN LILY, the second book in the BLOODLINE series, picks up where the first one left off. The characters develop a bit in this installment and the addition of a few new characters really enhances the storyline. I loved Adrian and his witty, sarcastic attitude, whichreally lightened up some tense situations. Sydney matures, as well as Jill, in this action-packed, thoroughly entertaining story with just the right amount of drama and taut scenarios to keep the reader guessing and riveted. I can't wait for the next book in this engaging paranormal adult series, THE INDIGO SPELL, coming out September 2013.

Spell Bound by Kelley Armstrong

Savannah Levine absently wishes she could give up her powers to re-do what happened with a little girl. However, someone hears her and her wish comes true. Not sure how to survive without her powers, Savannah tries to put up a strong front.

But, there is a witch-hunter stalking her and she knows
that without her powers, she could be an easy target. Thankfully, she has her best friend Adam with her. She’s been in love with Adam since she was twelve, but he treats her like his best buddy, not a girlfriend prospect.

When the witch-hunters get closer than ever to Savannah, she knows her time is running out. Adam implores her to go to Miami, to be near the rest of the family, where she will be safe. But Savannah wants to help out Roni, an apprentice witch, who implores Savannah for her help.

Adam is adamant that it’s a trap
, and he is fed up with Savannah playing victim without her powers. He knows she is still a strong person without them, but she won’t listen. He decides to go to Miami without her. But before he can get on the plane, something happens and Savannah is kidnapped. Will she be able to escape with her life and if so, will Adam finally know how she feels about him? Or does it end there, in a cement cell with no powers to help her escape?
SPELLBOUND is a page-turning, action-packed paranormal thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Savannah finally grows up a bit in this installment of the WOMEN OF THE OTHERWORLD series. It sets  the last book in the series, THIRTEEN, up beautifully, alluding to a good versus evil battle.Fans of the series will be rooting for Adam and Savannah and will enjoy the cameo appearances by many beloved characters from past books in the series. Highly enjoyable!

Because of You by Jessica Scott

Keeping his men alive is all that matters to Sergeant First Class Shane Garrison. But meeting Jen St. James the night before his latest deployment makes Shane wonder if there's more to life than war. He leaves for Iraq remembering a single kiss with a woman he'll never see again- until a near fatal attack lands him back at home and in her care.  Jen has survived her own brush with death and endured its scars. And yet there's a fire in Shane that makes Jen forget all about her past. He may be her patient, but when this warrior looks her in the eyes, she feels - for the first time in a long time - like a woman. Shane is too proud to ask for help, but for Jen, caring for him is more than a duty -it's a need. And as Jen guides Shane through the fires of healing, she finds something she never expected - her deepest desire.

Sergeant First Class Shane Garrison's life revolved around the army. It's even cost him his marriage.  His buddies want to cheer Shane up, so they go out on the town.  There, Shane meets Jen St. James, a nurse and cancer survivor.

Jen has been feeling less than a woman since she lost her left breast.  But when she meets Shane, he makes her feel feminine and whole again.  His departing kiss leaves her breathless and optimistic.

When Shane gets injured in Iraq, he is sent back home.  Surprisingly, it is Jen who is his nurse. But can they heal one another? They both have their own battles to fight within - Jen with her cancer and Shane with his legs.  Can they make themselves whole together so they can share a life together?

Because of You is a tear-jerking romance that will keep you captivated with the realistic characters.  I felt bad for both characters and what they must have been going through.  Scott pulls no punches, leaving the emotional scars and battles right out on the table.  She writes with sincerity and directness with two topics that can hit close to home for anyone.  A superb read any romance fan will enjoy!

Bloodlines by Richelle Mead

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, and since she helped out a dhampir, Rose Hathaway (See The Vampire Academy Series), she's been on thin ice with her organization. They are supposed to help clean up the messes, not create them. A dhampir is a product of a vampire and human union, and Jill Mastrano is one. She's the reason Sydney is about to head into a new assignment, and she knows she needs to ace it to win back her good standing with the Alchemist organization.

Jill is the sister of the vampire queen, and until the laws are changed, Jill's life is in extreme danger. A vampire can only be queen if she has other living relatives, c and Jill is Lissa's only relative. With her out of the way, Lissa can lose her throne and the vampire politics would renew with a vengeance. The plan is to move Jill into a human school in California. There, she can be safely hidden but just in case someone finds out where she is, Sydney will become a high school student right along with Jill, becoming her roommate. They will pass themselves off as sisters, with Jill's guardian, Eddie Castile, their brother. Adrian, soul bound to Jill, will also be passed off as their other brother, but he will stay at a local vampire's house. That's where Jill will go to feed twice a week.

Everything seems to be going smoothly until Sydney can't keep from investigating a weird fad going on at their school. The students all talk about their metallic tattoos and how they get special powers from them, like strength. Not to mention the girls that seem to be winding up dead with their blood drained and their throats slashed. Sydney knows that she needs to just follow her orders, but she just can't seem to help herself.

With romance, intrigue and new characters, Mead moves her world of humans and vampires into sunny California. I couldn't put this book down; it was so good! I loved the VAMPIRE ACADEMY SERIES, so I was anxious to see how Ms. Mead would change from Rose Hathaway to Sydney the Alchemist as her main narrator. With ease, I came to love Sydney and how she handled herself in a variety of situations. The story unfolded at a steady pace, with the action and mystery unfolding at just the right moments, leaving this reader craving more. Thankfully, the next in the series, THE GOLDEN LILY, was just released! Simply a wonderful paranormal young adult story that will enthrall many.

Glitch by Heather Anastasiu

The time is in the undetermined future where nuclear wars have destroyed most of the surface of the world and those surviving have moved underground. Whole communities have built below the surface with the governing body called The Community. When a child is born, they have a chip embedded into the base of their skull. It’s to null emotion and other senses.

Zoel has been glitching lately though. Those that glitch have rare moments of emotion, taste, smells – things that are otherwise grey when they are in the link, the computer components that make up their world. She knows that if she is caught, she will be repaired or even worse, deactivated. However, she has another secret that she wants to keep hidden, her new telekinetic powers.

She loves having the sense of self and wants to escape The Community where they are basically drones. But she knows that if she goes to the surface, the air is toxic,  and she will die. But when she finds another boy who is glitching as well and realizes that there may be more of them out there, waiting to be discovered and needing help,  they realize they are not alone.

With the help of Adrian, another boy whose face appears in her dreams, even though she knows she just met him, they try to get the glitchers together to escape The Community and join the resistance,  a group who want freedom for all.

GLITCH is a fresh dystopian adventure with romance, action and a well-built post-apocalyptic world that had me up late turning the pages, thoroughly invested in the story. The characters are likable, but it is the world that Anastasiu has built that kept me riveted with all of the details and how the plot unfolded and came together in a nail-biting,  action-packed ending that will leave readers begging for the next installment, OVERIDE, due out in February 2013.

First Do No Evil (Blood Secrets, #1) by Carey Baldwin

From Goodreads - There’s a killer lurking in Dr. Skylar Novak’s family tree: the gene for breast cancer. That's why her brilliant brother invented the Bella vaccine. But even if the miracle drug protects her from the cancer that took her mother's life, it can't save Sky from the flesh and bone evil stalking her in secret.

When the killer strikes, detective Daniel Benson finds himself in the wrong place at the right time. The bold detective manages to save Sky's life…just in time for her to return the favor. Survival leads to seduction, and Danny risks everything—his career, even his life, to keep Sky safe. But will the buried sins they uncover cost him her heart?

I enjoy thrilling suspense books and if you toss in some romance, that's a-okay by me.  First Do No Evil by Carey Baldwin is a gripping medical thriller that really surprised me.  By the cover, I thought this book would be more romance then suspense, but she blends them perfectly, tossing in her own medical knowledge to really bring believability to the plot.

Sky's life has been filled with tragedy.  From her mother dying from breast cancer, her father murdered in a robbery to her fiance being killed in a diner.  It's in this diner that Danny is introduced. He's a detective and a widower raising a teenage daughter.

It seems to coincidental that those close to Sky keep dying to Danny and he begins to investigate further, against the behest of his superiors and the Mayor.  The closer he gets to the truth and to Sky, the more her life is endangered.  He's falling for her fast, and she him, but can their love survive the evil surrounding them? Sky is afraid to give her heart to Danny; everyone she loves dies.

Even with the killer being known to the reader early on, it doesn't detract from the storyline.  It only adds to it with Baldwin's clever and ambitious writing.  The characters are so well developed, they just leap off of the page, will real problems and emotions that will keep you riveted.  The action is so detailed that I had chills running up my arms, with my heart-thumping like crazy, riding the adrenaline roller coaster, along with the characters.  A debut novel by this author that reads like it's written by a veteran, I definitely can't wait to read the next in this exciting series!

Masks of the Lost Kings by Tom Bane

From Goodreads - Following the sudden disappearance of treasure hunter Ben Sanders in Mexico, beautiful archaeologist Suzy da Silva is snatched from the cloistered environs of Oxford University and thrust into a deadly maelstrom of intrigue and discovery. Joining forces with astrophysicist Tom Brooking she crosses four continents, to unlock the dark secrets of Tutankhamun's tomb, the Holy Sepulchre and the mysterious Mayan Temple of Inscriptions to reveal a mysterious truth. Together they risk their lives, pursued by martial assassins and renegade special forces, fighting the forces of evil to discover hidden knowledge so precious that it has lain dormant for over a thousand years.

When I first saw the cover of Masks of Lost Kings, it immediately drew me - reminenscent of Egyptian Tombs and Raiders of the Lost Ark movie.  Like a moth to flame, I was hooked, hoping the story captivated me as much as the cover art.

Suzy da Silva is an archeologist studying at Oxford when she is thrust into a quest with astrophysicist Tom Brooking to uncover the origins of Christianity.   The two of them embarq on a journey spanning several continents, where intrigue, murder and dark secrets are exposed. Soon, they are running for their lives,  for the information they carry and for the secrets they seek.

Bane has done a phenomenal job of bringing the reader to ancient times and incorporating thought-provoking ideas into the plot.  Suzy is a diverse character and Tom is great in a supporting role as the two of them try to stay alive while international conspirators would rather leave some things buried. Really detail oriented writing bring the scenes to life and will keep you thoroughly engaged in this thrilling adventure! Highly recommend!!

Malibu Hard Water Natural Wellness Treatment Product Review

We have hard water at our house.  We have a well, but no water softener.  Because of it, we get mineral build-up, not only in our sinks and showers, but on our clothing and in our hair.  If we don't use some sort of treatment regulary, our hair can get an orange tinge - reminds me of rust. Also, our hair isn't as silky as it could be because of the mineral build-up.

Thanks to Malibu treatment, we don't get that tinge anymore and my hair is super silky.  With Malibu, you just put the vitamin complex in the palm of your hand and dissolve it into a little bit of the water until you have a gel-like substance.  Then lather into your hair and rinse out.   It removes all hard water minerals, brassiness and gives your hair more managability and shine.   You can use it daily, weekly or whenever it suits your personal schedule and hair needs best.

It's very portable, coming in a small packet, which makes it great for travel. We all use this in our household and it's very economical compared to having a Malibu done at the salon - which can get expensive.   Good for all ages and hair types, you can purchase Malibu Hard Water Natural Wellness Treatment by the packet or by the box.  Don't have brassy dry hair again - get a Malibu! Totally love this product and highly recommend!

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Going To The Bad by Nora McFarland

From Amazon - Working as a TV news photographer at her hometown television station, Lilly has documented Bakersfield’s most violent crimes and tragic accidents. To stay sane and avoid burnout, she’s developed a wicked sense of humor and a very thick skin. For her, a vicious shooting is just another day on the job. But what if the victim is someone she loves? Thrown off balance by the brutal attack on her uncle Bud in her own home, Lilly decides to handle the tragedy the only way she knows how. Using all her TV station’s resources and her own considerable skills, Lilly dives headlong into the investigation. But even with the assistance of her well-meaning but eccentric coworkers, this story may prove her last. Because as Lilly untangles a history of her uncle’s misdeeds and betrayals, a clever killer is preparing to strike again. Can she break the story in time to prevent another murder, or will Lilly be the next victim?

Lilly Hawkins is a news photographer and she is good at her job.  She takes grisly crime scene photographs and more often than not, finds herself caught up in the investigation.  Christmas Eve, she hears on the scanner that shots were fired, so she moves quickly when she gets the location, her house!  She knows that her boyfriend Rod is there and she's scared he's been hurt or worse.

But when she arrives, she realizes that it's her Uncle Bud who was shot.  She didn't even know he was in town. But neither here nor there, Lilly wants to know who shot him and why.  With some help of her newspaper co-workers, she dives into the investigation, not liking where some of it takes her - into Uncle Bud's shady past.

What ensues is a hysterical, page-turning suspense that will keep you thoroughly entertained. McFarland has a knack at character development and dialogue that really brings them to life.  Lilly's sarcasm and wit gave me a few chuckles and I was impressed with the pace of this story.

This is the first McFarland novel I have read, but it is the third in the series.  Going To The Bad can be read as a standalone - I had no problems with backstory of characters or events.  However, I  urge you to get the first two in the series, A Bad Day's Work and Hot, Shot, and Bothered, just because if they are anything as good as this one - they can't be missed.  Mystery lovers won't want to miss this one!

The Last Israelis by Noah Beck

From Amazon - Iran has threatened to destroy Israel while actively developing the nuclear means to do so. Israel’s Prime Minister is suddenly hospitalized -- shortly after learning that Iran is just a week away from entering the so-called “zone of immunity” by transferring key components of its nuclear weapons program into a mountain impervious to attack by Israeli jets.

Israel’s "second-strike" answer to the existential threat posed by a nuclear Iran is a powerful submarine armed with nuclear-tipped missiles that can strike targets 930 miles away. A gripping cautionary tale about a nuclear Iran, "The Last Israelis" takes a suspense-filled ride aboard the Dolphin submarine.

If you like reading military thrillers, then The Last Israelis should be added to your wishlist. From the opening pages throughout until the powerful conclusion, The Last Israelis is thrilling, engaging, shocking and thought-provoking.

With the Prime Minister of Israel hospitalized, it's a perfect time for Iran to make good on their threat of taking care of Israel once and for all with their nuclear weapons that are almost complete. That's when the Dolphin, an Islraelis submarine, is called back to reassemble for a mission of their own.

Daniel Zion, who is captain, and thirty-four other men, all from different walks of life, become the crew of the sub. All of the men have their own beliefs and thoughts of what is happening and what should happen, and the sub fills with hate and distrust among them.

Meanwhile, while they are under water, they lose contact with Naval Command. Now, they have to decide if they should go ahead with their orders of setting off missiles or not. But leading up to this decision is a journey of epic proportions - the men have dreams that are hard to distinguish between reality, there is an enemy sub in the waters, a fire and more. It's a treacherous and realistic adventure that will give you thrills and chills.

Noah Beck has written such a multi-faceted novel; one filled with politics, life-altering choices, back-to-back action and compelling characters. I could easily see this novel made into a movie - it's so vivid and surreal. Riveting, exciting and too close for comfort, The Last Israelis is a well-written novel that is sure to be a best-seller. I finished days ago and I'm still absorbing everything. It's definitely impactive!

Roll Call by Glenn Langhor Tour

Photobucket

Roll Call is a true prison story with a cast of characters that include Mexican drug cartels, Southern California street gangs and Hell's Angels all fighting for their piece of the drug culture. In the middle of it all, B.J. is hell bent for destruction until he realizes his destiny in the nick of time.

Add a good detective squeezed out of the loop by an overzealous narcotic detective; a robust prison union trying to call the shots; a handful of drug criminals trying to find their conscience and you have the perfect recipe for a revolutionary uprising, bound by blood, all leaving the reader wondering, who are the real criminals?

Roll Call is a compelling and page-turning read.  Told from the perspective of his own time in prison, tossed with a few bits here and there of fiction.  The reader gets an upclose glimpse of what it's really like behind bars and what can happen with those close to you.

It's a long read, well over seven hundred pages, and at times, it gets a bit dry.  But as the character's backgrounds emerge, the present begins to make sense and I found myself hoping that BJ would turn his life around.  If you put your mind to it, you can do anything.  Life is all about choices and Roll Call has good choices and bad, depicting consequences of both.   It took me awhile, but I eventually got to the point I couldn't put this book down - I HAD to know what happened next.  I was definitely not disappointed and glad that I stuck with it.
